The objective of power system control is to maintain reliable and economic generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power. Load forecasting is needed to predict customer demand so generators can be dispatched economically while maintaining reliable frequency and voltage regulation. Key terms include load curve, load duration curve, load factor, diversity factor, and reserve capacity, which help quantify load characteristics and reliability needs. Computer control systems are increasingly used for economic dispatch of generators across control areas to optimize power system operation.
