Boston, the son of two actors who died before his third

England by John Allan, with whom he had a troubled
relationship. Poe’s adult life was difficult, too. He
earned only a meager living from his writings. Still,
during his short life he wrote poems and stories that
have made him one of the best-known American

Annabel Lee
By: Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea.
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;--
5And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

She was a child and I was a child

In this kingdom by the sea.
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
10I and my Annabel Lee—

With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,
15A wind blew out of a cloud by night

Chilling my Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
20In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me;--
Yes! That was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
25That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling

And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
30
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:--

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

35Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;--

And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
40In her sepulcher there by the sea—

In her tomb by the side of the sea.

4) Discussion
“This poem is an example of what kind of poetry? “It is an example of a narrative poetry”
“Correct. It is a narrative poetry, a poetry that tells a
story. Narrative poems have a special appeal. They
present dramatic events vividly, using some of the
elements as short stories such as plot, characters and
even dialogue.
a) Recalling
“Where do the events in this poem take place?” “In a kingdom by the sea”
“At what stage of life was the narrator when he fell “At a young age or when they were kids”
in love?”
“What cause Annabel Lee’s death?” “She was chilled to death. The jealousy of the angels
was the reason why a wind came down from a cloud and
killed her”
“Why can neither the angels nor the demons “Because they love each other so much that even death
separate the narrator’s soul from that of Annabel could not separate them”
Lee?”
“What does the narrator do all the night tide?” “The narrator lies down beside the coffin of Annabel
Lee by the side of the sea”
b) Interpreting
“How can a love be more than love?” “When you love with a love that was more than love.
Even death couldn’t be a hindrance and that’s what they
call eternal love”
“How would you describe the love between the “Their love was special and intense, even though they
narrator and Annabel Lee?” were so young”
“What can you say about the narrator’s mood?” “The narrator feels nostalgic. There is longing and
sadness in his voice”
c) Applying
“The poet Countee Cullen once wrote, “Never love
with all your heart. It only ends in aching.” What “It means, you don’t have to love too selflessly. You
does he mean by this?” still have to preserve some for your own self in order not
to suffer unbearable pain in the end”
“Do you think the narrator would agree? Why or why “No, he won’t. Because for him love is never selfish”
not?”

d) Literature Analysis
“What have you noticed in the poem?” “Some of the lines are repeated several times”
“Not including the title, how many times does the “It appeared 7 times”
name Annabel Lee appear in the poem?”
“What line in the first stanza is repeated almost “The line in the kingdom by the sea”
exactly in the next three stanzas?”

3
“Which adjective describing Annabel Lee is repeated “beautiful”
3 times in the poem?”
“Why do you think the writer repeats the name “Because she’s the title character, and she’s the reason
“Annabel Lee” so many times?” the poem exists.”

IV. Generalization
“Based on the poem presented, define repetition” “Repetition is the use of a word or group of words more
“What are its purposes?” than once.
“It creates a variety of effects such as excitement,
peacefulness and even suspense. It is used for emphasis.
e) Infusion of Values
There are many ways to show how you love
someone. There are those who gave their life as proof (Student’s answers may vary)
of their undeniable love like famous heroes ho fought
for our freedom. If you are Dr. Jose Rizal, will you
give your life also for our country’s welfare? As a
student, how will you be able to show your love to
your fellowmen, to the country as a whole and to
your family?

V. Evaluation
“As an evaluation, I would like you to have a
5-minute dramatization of the poem. Count off from
1 to 5 and form your group. I will give you ten
minutes to prepare. Use some parts of the poem for
the script. Use repetition. I will grade each group
using the following criteria.
