The Elimination Method Guided Notes

The document discusses the elimination method for solving systems of linear equations. It explains that the elimination method uses the addition property of equality to add the same value to each side of an equation. It provides examples of using addition alone and using multiplication followed by addition to eliminate variables from systems of equations and isolate the solutions. The goal is to eliminate one variable to solve for the other and check the answer in the original equations.

The Elimination Method

Learning Objective(s)
· Solve a system of equations when no multiplication is necessary to eliminate a
variable.
· Solve a system of equations when multiplication is necessary to eliminate a variable.

Introduction
The elimination method for solving systems of linear equations uses the addition property of
equality. You can add the same value to each side of an equation.

Using Addition to Eliminate a Variable

Let’s see how this system is solved using the elimination method.

Example
Problem Use elimination to solve the system.
x – y = −6
x + y = 8

Add the equations.

Solve for x.

Substitute x = 1 into one of the original

equations and solve for y.

Be sure to check your answer in both

equations!

The answers check.

Answer The solution is (1, 7).

Unfortunately not all systems work out this easily.
Using Multiplication and Addition to Eliminate a Variable

Many times adding the equations or adding the opposite of one of the equations will not result in
eliminating a variable. Look at the system below.

See the example below.

Example
Problem Solve for x and y.
Equation A: 2x+5y=5
Equation B: -6x+7y=-37

Look for terms that can be

eliminated. The equations do not
have any x or y terms with the
same coefficients.

Multiply the first equation by 3 so

they do have the same coefficient.

Rewrite the system, and add the

equations.

Solve for y.

Substitute x = -1 into one of the

original equations to find y.

Check your answer.

The answers check.

Answer The solution is (5, -1).

Summary
Combining equations is a powerful tool for solving a system of equations. Adding or subtracting
two equations in order to eliminate a common variable is called the elimination (or addition)
method. Once one variable is eliminated, it becomes much easier to solve for the other one.
Multiplication can be used to set up matching terms in equations before they are combined.
When using the multiplication method, it is important to multiply all the terms on both sides of
the equation—not just the one term you are trying to eliminate.
