Networking Course Outline

This document outlines a course on data communication and networks. It discusses why the study of data communication and networking is important as it has changed how people communicate, do business, interact socially and entertain themselves. The course will cover topics such as transmission media characteristics, physical layer design, data link, medium access control, routing and transport to understand how data can be communicated between two connected devices and how multiple devices can be connected to form a network. Students will be evaluated through periodic assessments, an end semester exam, and continuous assessments including quizzes and programming assignments.

15ECE311 DATA COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKS

Motivation and Course Outline

Why study DCN?
• Data communication and networking is continuing to change
the way people
• Communicate (VoIP, Gmail, Skype, …)
• Do business (Amazon, eBay, Internet Banking, ….)
• Interact socially (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, ….)
• Entertain themselves (Youtube, Netflix, ….)
• Do research (NSFNET in the US, ERNET in India, …)
• In summary, it is shaping our everyday lives
• Data Communication (between two connected devices)
• How to make two directly connected devices talk to each other?
• Networking (among multiple devices, some acting as relays)
• How to connect multiple devices together to form a network?
Outline of the Course
• Transmission Media Characteristics
• Cables (co-axial, optical fiber), Wireless (RF, Microwave, IR)
• How does it affect the bandwidth, delay, cost and other aspects?
• Physical Layer Design
• How to send bits across a transmission medium matching its
characteristics?
• Data Link
• How to reliably send bits one hop over an unreliable medium?
• Medium Access Control
• How to share the medium?
• Routing
• How to find a path between two entities?
• Transport
• How to guarantee end-to-end reliability and timeliness
• Avoid deadlocks
