Lotte Reiniger Handout

Lotte Reiniger was a German film director born in 1899 who pioneered the technique of silhouette animation. She directed over 40 films using this technique, with her most famous being The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Reiniger cut out drawings from her storyboards and manipulated the paper cutouts to create animated movements, laying them flat to film frame-by-frame. Discover as much as you can about Lotte Reiniger in 10 minutes. Write your

She was born on the 2nd June 1899 and died on the 19th June 1981.
She was a German film director, she was also the pioneer of silhouette
aninmation. Her best known films were The Adventures of Price Achmed.
She is also noted for having devised a predecessor to the first multiple camera. In
total she made more than 40 films using all of her invention.

She was born in Charlottenburg which is a district of Berlin. Her parents were
called Carl Reiniger and Elenore Lina Wilhelmine Rakette. When Lotte Reiniger
was a child she was obsessed with Chinese arts of paper cutting of silhoutte
puppetry. She even made her own puppet theatre to put on shows for her friends
and family. When she was a teenager she developed a love of films.

Whilst watching the video jot down the process Lotte Reinger goes through
to make her animations.
First, she cuts out the drawings she has made from her story boards.
She then cuts out each part of her characters
She then puts all the pieces back together giving them human like movements.
After she has done these checks to see if the figures have these movements, she
then lays them on a flat surface and then uses a roller over the figure to ensure
that there is no creases in the figures. After that they are ready for the shows
that they will be used in

Why is this form of animation effective? What's not so
effective?
What I like about it is that it is very simple but it also doesn’t give much detail on
what is going on so its down to you to make your own mind up on what is going
on because you cant see much or any facial features so you have to go by body
language. The background scene gives a simple idea of where the story is set
and what climates and situations the characters in the story maybe in.
