Iepdda Le Roi Danse-2
“Le Roi danse” i s a movie that highlights the relationship of the great composer Jean-Baptiste
Lully and his relationship to the King of France, King Louis XIV. It was revealed there how
Lully shaped the ideologies and beliefs of the king, where he gave utmost importance to the art
of dance and music. The movie also tackled how King Louis XIV used his expertise in the arts as
a strategy to save his kingdom from recession and his ability to take control of the government.
In my opinion, the movie seemed like an exact reflection of how the Kingdom of France was
viewed by other nations, grandiose and powerful. The movie presented the majestic life of King
Louis XIV and the thriving state of dance and music during his reign and perhaps it is also the
same with how the French saw their kingdom, despite many economic failures and regression. It
was also a great persuasive piece that really invited a lot of its audience, myself included, to
know more about the art of film-making and not just history as it provided a stunningly visual
film that earned its right to be called a masterpiece by itself. Also the fact how the director and
writers of the film did not hesitate to show the most explicit parts of Lully’s life such as how he
tackled his sexuality and his undying loyalty to the king just adds to more reasons to the success
of the film. One of the many perks of watching the film with a professional dancer is that I was
able to pick up from the film where oftentimes, the music composer is also the dancer because it
was shown in the film how Lully composed his music and then choreographed a dance to it. It
also surprised me how Lully found combining music and words an outrageous and absurd idea
when most of the music that we have today are lyrical pieces. The scene wherein Lully stayed
outside the king’s door to play music as he got better also surprised me because of how persistent
Lully was that he’d rather serve the king first rather than tend to his wife who was giving birth at
the time.
In terms of the techniques of the dance from the reign of King Louis XIV, I can say that dance
has really evolved into something that has more liberty of expression, unlike the small, constraint
movements that King Louis performs as seen in the film. During the film, it was also observable
how dancers become the main subject of the performance unlike before where they were simply
there to serve as props to the main actors. It is only right to say that dance really is an expensive
passion to pursue because even from the start, it was already catered to the high-class society of
kings and royalties.
Nonetheless, the film, “Le Roi danse” s erves as a great evidence of how art, dance, music and
theater contributed to society because of how it was able to help the people cope with the
economic problems plaguing their country during the 16th-17th century. Perhaps his smart
strategy of turning the attention of the people from problem could also be one of the reasons why
the reign of King Louis XIV was considered to be the longest reigning monarch of a sovereign
country in European history.
