REFLECTION PAPER
The film is based on the ancient Mayan phenomenon, which December 21,
2012 is the end of the world on the calendar. The planet is destroyed because of
solar flares and killed everyone on earth. It was a tragic moment for everyone
especially those who are not informed beforehand. Only the important and
richest people are informed and have tickets to the huge ark.
The greatest challenge in the movie is how a father and his wife with two
kids manage to survive as the world starts falling apart. It is also a challege for
the president of the United States as to how he can handle the situation and to
save his people. For the richest and important people, this kind of catastrophic
events are not a problem because they actually have the money to pay for an
airplane or a ticket to the huge ark that the government prepared. However, for
commoners like the main characters, have no idea what will happen and what to
do during the catastrophe. The love of a family is stronger than any disasters. It
is the primary reason they want to survive. The family stayed strong despite the
hardships they faced. They tried their best to make it into the ark, which they
have done successfully with the help of other people.
Moreover, if the disaster happens in real life, questions came up in my mind.
What would I do? If the government knew, who should be told? If there was a
way that some people could survive, who should decide who lives and who dies?
No one knows the answer to these questions until it happens. Each year natural
disasters kill thousands of people and inflict billions of money in economic losses.
No nation or community is immune to their damage. As a student, I can only
contribute little things that would make a big result if all students would do the
same. First, I will donate and volunteer to organizations that helps our
environment clean. There are a lot of local organizations that protects our
environment, like WWF-Philippines, they work to improve Filipino lives by crafting
solutions to environmental issues. Second, I will join a local community event that
organize a walk, run or other activity to raise money. Third, I will dispose my
trash properly and avoid using plastics. Disposing our grabage properly is a small
act that has a huge impact to our society. If everyone will cooperate, problems
with grabages will not exist. Fourth, I will prepare if there is an upcoming natural
disaster by getting a first aid kit, hygiene kit, and other emergency that we can
use. Lastly, I will help my fellow people in delivering informations and getting
prepared for such catastrophic events.
I love the movie and it has a moral lesson in it. It warns us about how the
world changes. It tells us how mankind destroy the nature that causes global
disasters. I also love the idea of how a family stays strong beneath hardships. It
shows the love of a parent to his/her children. I will surely recommend this movie
because it's a must watch especially to kids. They have to know that their actions
have greater effect on the world and they must think before they act. Also, the
direction used in the movie is very great. The visual effects used in the movie to
specify the end of the Earth and how the people run here and there to save their
lives also seems out to be great.
