Veda Eko Hum Bahu Syam

Compere: The word Veda is derived from Vidya meaning knowledge. On the one
hand, it propagates spiritual life and on the other, it teaches the ways of life to
fulfill all human desires while living in this world. Today’s lifestyle has created
conflict in inter personal and social relationships. The Ashram system as
propagated, in the Vedas, is the ideal way of life.

Internationally acclaimed dancer Reela Hota, is presenting the event: The Vedas,
to highlight the material, scientific and spiritual wisdom of the Vedas and bring
back Vedic living in contemporary India through Dance. The dance will depict the
nature and philosophy of Vedas, human desires, the ashram system and the
realization of the ultimate truth- that is advaita - in Odissi style. The Concept,
Script & Dance Choreography is credited to Yoga Guru Bijoylaxmi Hota and
original musical score is by Padvibhushan Rajan sajan Mishra and Shri
Swaraansh Mishra

The dance begins with, Mangalacharan: an invocation to the vedic hymns

dedicated to Agni-fire, Apah-water and to the Supreme himself. The prime
sustainers of life, MANGALACHARAN!

ITEM 2 GRIHASTA ASHRAM

The Vedas had recognized the role of a woman’s emotions in shaping the quality
of the society and hence gave utmost importance to a woman’s mental state.
According to the Vedas, the bride would enter her husband’s house “to rule there
along with her husband, as a queen, over the other members of the family”. It even
says “The deities delight in places where women are revered but where women are
not revered all rites are fruitless. Where the women of the family are miserable, the
Veda Eko Hum Bahu Syam
family is soon destroyed. If the woman is radiant the whole family is radiant
Therefore men who wish to prosper should always revere their women.” And they
must ensure that their wives and other women never weep out of sorrow.

Hey bride! You shall bring bliss to all and direct our homes towards our purpose
of living’-so says the Atharva Veda. The next item depicts the beauty and harmony
of the GRIHASTHA ASHRAM!

ITEM 3 SANNYAS

Having fulfilled his material desires the grahastha steps into the third ashram-
Vanaprastha, where he gradually withdraws from his active life and devotes more
time to spiritual practices. Vanaprastha gives way to Sanyas, the last ashram. At
this stage one lives as a recluse. To fulfil his fourth and final desire, the attainment
of Moksha or salvation- the goal of every individual soul on this earth. It is a state
where the individual unites with his maker and realizes that he is not apart but one
with the Supreme; -ekoham bahushyam. I am one and I am many. The next and the
concluding item of this evening, Moksha, depicts the joy and ecstasy of that great
union.
