Steel Connection - IS Code

1) The document describes the design of a moment connection using bolted end plates. It checks the connection for tension, shear, combined shear and tension, and the capacity of the end plate. 2) The connection uses 6 bolts and can resist a moment of 50 kNm and shear of 150 kN. Checks show the bolts and end plate can resist these forces. 3) The second section describes the design of a shear connection using 4 bolts and a gusset plate. It performs a check of the bolts' shear capacity according to the relevant code.

Design of Moment Connection (bolted)

Check for Tension

Beam Size : MB200

Design Force : M= 50 kNm (moment)

V= 150 kN (shear)

Depth of beam (h) = 200 mm = 0.2 m Flange thk (tf) = 10 mm

Total tension on bolts = M / h = 250 kN

Provide 6 nos. 20 dia bolts of Grade 8.8

No of effective bolts = 4

So, Tension on each bolt = 250/ 4 = 62.5 kN

Tension Capacity of Bolt (Ref cl 10.3.5 of IS:800)

Nominal tension capacity of the bolt Tnb = 0.9 fub An = 176400 N = 176 kN
fub = ultimate tensile stress of the bolt = 800 N/mm2
An = net tensile stress area = 245 mm2 (Ref IS:1367 - Part 3)

fyb Asb (gmb / gm0) = 228364 N = 228 kN > Tnb Hence OK

fyb = yield stress of the bolt = 640 N/mm2
Asb = shank area of the bolt = 314 mm2
gmb = gm1 = 1.25 gm0 = 1.10 (Table 5 of IS:800)

Hence, Tension Capacity Tdb = Tnb / gmb = 141 kN

Prying Force acting on Bolt (Ref cl 10.4.7 of IS:800)

ly b h f0 be t4
Q= Te -
2 le 27 le ly2

Length of end plate (b) = 300 mm

ly = distance between bolt centre & edge of beam = 40 mm

le1 = 1.1 t b f0 t = thickness of the end plate = 20 mm

fy b= 2 (for non pre-tensioned bolt)
= 47 mm f0 = proof stress = 560 N/mm2
fy = yield stress of steel = 250 N/mm2

le2 = edge distance of bolt = 30 mm

le = minimum of le1 & le2 = 30 mm

Te = actual tension in bolt = 62.5 kN = 62500 N

h= 1.5 be = effective width of flange per pair of bolts = 65 mm

Hence Prying Force Q = 32679 N = 32.7 kN

So, Total Tension on each bolt (Tb) = Te + Q = 62.5 + 32.7 = 95.2 kN < Tdb
Hence OK
Check for Shear

Shear Capacity of Bolt (Ref cl 10.3.3 of IS:800)

Nominal shear capacity of bolt Vnsb = fu (nn Anb + ns Asb) = 113161 N = 113.2 kN
3
fu = ultimate tensile strength of the bolt = 800 N/mm2
nn = no of shear planes with threads = 1
ns = no of shear planes without threads = 0
Anb = net shear area of the bolt at threads = 245 mm2
Asb = nominal plain shank area of the bolt = 314 mm2

Design shear strength of the bolt Vdsb = Vnsb / gmb = 91 kN

Bearing Capacity of Bolt (Ref cl 10.3.4 of IS:800)

Nominal bearing strength of bolt Vnpb = 2.5 kb d t fu = 170833 N = 170.8 kN

e / 3 d0 = 0.42 e = bolt edge distance = 30 mm

kb is min of
m

p / 3 d0 - 0.25 = 0.86 p = bolt pitch distance = 80 mm

fub / fu = 1.95 d0 = hole diameter = 24 mm
1.0 fu = ultimate tensile stress of the plate = 410 N/mm2
So, kb = 0.42 d = bolt dia = 20 mm

Design bearing strength of the bolt Vdpb = Vnpb / gmb = 137 kN

Hence, Bolt Shear Capacity (Vdb) = Minimum of shear & bearing capacity = 91 kN

Total shear on each bolt (Vsb) = 150 / 4 = 37.5 kN kN < Vdb

Hence OK

Check for Combined Shear and Tension

Vsb 2 Tb 2 37.5 2 95.2 2

+ = + = 0.62
Vdb Tdb 91 141
< 1, Hence OK

Check for End Plate

Strength due to Yield of Gross Section (Ref cl 6.2 of IS:800)

Tdg = Ag fy / gm0 = 1363636 N = 1364 kN Ag = 6000 mm2

Strength due to Rupture of Critical Section (Ref cl 6.3.1 of IS:800)

Tdn = 0.9 An fu / gm1 = 921024 N = 921 kN An = (b - n d0) t = 3120 mm2

Strength due to Block Shear (Ref cl 6.4.1 of IS:800)

Bolt c/c distance = 80 mm Bolt edge distance = 30 mm
Avg = gross area in shear = 2200 mm2
Avn = net area in shear = 1480 mm2
Atg = gross area in tension = 600 mm2
Atn = net area in tension = 360 mm2

Avg fy 0.9 Atn fu

+ = 288675 + 106272 = 394947
3 gm0 gm1
min of
m

Avn fu 0.9 Atg fy

+ = 280269 + 122727 = 402996
3 gm1 gm0

So, Tdb = 394947 N = 395 kN

So, Strength of Plate = minimum of Tdg, Tdn & Tdb = 395 kN > 250 kN
Hence OK
Design of Shear Connection
Beam Size : MB200

Design Force : V= 120 kN (shear)

Provide 4 nos. 16 dia bolts of Grade 8.8

No of effective bolts = 4

Gusset Plate Size : Length (b) = 150 mm

Thickness (t) = 12 mm
From Table 5 of IS:800
gm0 = 1.10 gmb = gm1 = 1.25 gmw = 1.25 (shop weld)

Check for Shear

nn = no of shear planes with threads = 1
ns = no of shear planes without threads = 0
Anb = net shear area of the bolt at threads = 157 mm2 (Ref IS:1367 - Part 3)
Asb = nominal plain shank area of the bolt = 2
201 mm

Design shear strength of the bolt Vdsb = Vnsb / gmb = 58 kN

Bearing Capacity of Bolt (Ref cl 10.3.4 of IS:800)

Nominal bearing strength of bolt Vnpb = 2.5 kb d t fu = 82000 N = 82.0 kN

e / 3 d0 = 0.42 e = bolt edge distance = 25 mm

kb is minm of

p / 3 d0 - 0.25 = 0.58 p = bolt pitch distance = 50 mm

fub / fu = 1.95 d0 = hole diameter = 20 mm
1.0 fu = ultimate tensile stress of the plate = 410 N/mm2
So, kb = 0.42 d = bolt dia = 16 mm

Design bearing strength of the bolt Vdpb = Vnpb / gmb = 66 kN

Hence, Bolt Shear Capacity (Vdb) = Minimum of shear & bearing capacity = 58 kN

Total shear on each bolt (Vsb) = 120 / 4 = 30 kN kN < Vdb

Hence OK
Check for Gusset Plate

Strength due to Yield of Gross Section (Ref cl 6.2 of IS:800)

Bolt c/c distance = 50 mm Bolt edge distance = 25 mm
Avg = gross area in shear = 900 mm2
Avn = net area in shear = 540 mm2
Atg = gross area in tension = 300 mm2
Atn = net area in tension = 180 mm2
fy = yield stress of steel = 250 N/mm2
Avg fy 0.9 Atn fu
+ = 118094 + 53136 = 171230
3 gm0 gm1
minm of

Avn fu 0.9 Atg fy

+ = 102260 + 61364 = 163624
3 gm1 gm0

So, Tdb = 163624 N = 164 kN

So, Strength of Plate = minimum of Tdg, Tdn & Tdb = 164 kN > 120 kN
Hence OK

Check for Welding

Design strength of Fillet Weld fwd = fwn / gmw = 236.7 / 1.25 = 189 N/mm2
where, fwn = fu / 3 = 236.7 N/mm2 (Ref cl 10.5.7.1.1 of IS:800)

Considering 6 mm thk weld, Weld length required = 74.8 mm on each side
