Abstract-Railway Track Monitoring System

Railways are crucial for public transportation, requiring frequent track inspections to ensure safety. Traditionally done by human inspectors, computer vision systems using cameras on trains are now more common. Employing drones provides a cost-effective way to monitor tracks with flexibility to operate at various heights and terrains difficult for humans. Drone imagery contains challenges like referencing and ground sampling that require preprocessing, but allows monitoring without disrupting train schedules and can survey multiple tracks simultaneously from higher altitudes. Experimental results show drones can reliably and accurately monitor railways.

Visualize and Monitoring Railway Track and Through Drone Imagery

Abstract

Railways are considered as a lifeline for the public, millions of people use
railways for travel and transportation on a daily basis. In order to maintain safety
and security of public and goods, frequent inspection of tracks are essential.
Traditionally, monitoring the railway track by human inspectors was done.
Nowadays, computer vision-based systems are used due to their flexibility and
ease of use. In recent years, various prototypes of vision based inspection system
have been proposed; most have a camera mounted on carts or trains. Employing
drones for such monitoring systems provides a cost effective and accurate means
for monitoring tracks. Drones provide flexibility to operate at various heights and
in adverse terrains where regular inspection methods cannot be applied. And it is
played a major role in the area such as bridges and tunnels where human
inspection cannot be applied. Therefore aerial images from drones provide
useful information for analysis.

Drone data contains various challenges such as referencing and ground

sampling that requires various preprocessing task. Despite this, monitoring through
drones has several advantages such as it does not require separate tracks for data
acquisition, thereby not hindering the schedule of trains. And as the drone
ascends to higher altitudes (25,000 miles coverage), multiple tracks can be easily
collected simultaneously. And the usage of drone is extended with preparing
contour maps of the area where new rail lines are proposed. Thus, it can be
frequently used for monitoring any situation. The experimental results will ensure
that the proposed method provides high reliability and accuracy.
