Conversion of Units

The document provides examples of calculating revenue tons (RT) from information about shipment dimensions, weights, and volumes. It includes a conversion table and examples of determining the RT for shipments given their gross weight in kilograms or pounds, and the volume occupied by boxes/crates in the shipment calculated from their dimensions. The examples show working through calculating the volume in cubic meters or feet first, and then comparing this to the gross tonnage to determine the RT.

exercises
GIVEN:
Shipment : 10 boxes of Spare Parts
Box Dimension : 3’ x 4’ x 5’ per box
GW : 15,500 kgs

Find : RT
SOLUTION:

a) Solve for VW

VW = L x W x H x No. of boxes
box
VW = 3’ x 4’ x 5’ x 10 boxes = 600 CUFT
box
Thus:
RT = 600 CUFT = 17.0 MT
35.29 CUFT/RT

b) Solve for MT, then compare:

MT = 15,500 kgs = 15.5 MT

1,000 kgs/MT

c) Therefore:
RT = 17.0 RT
GIVEN : 8 crates- Machineries
Dimension: 1 mtr x 1.5 mtrs x 3 mtrs per crate
T. Gr. Wt : 70,000 lbs

FIND : RT
SOLUTION:

a) Solve for MT

MT = 70,000 lbs x 0.4536 kgs/lb

1,000 kgs/MT

MT = 31,752.0 kgs = 31.75 MT

1,000 kgs/MT

b) Solve for VW, then compare:

VW = L x W x H (mtrs) x No. of crates

Crate
VW = 1 mtr x 1.50 mtrs x 3 mtrs x 8 crates = 36.0 CBM
Crate

c) Therefore:
RT = 36.0 RT
GIVEN : 10 boxes
Dim/box : 0.8 m x 0.9 m x 1.0 m
TGW : 15,000 lbs

FIND : RT
SOLUTION:

a) Solve for VW

VW = (0.8 m x 0.9 m x 1.0 m) x 10 = 7.20 CBM

b) Solve for MT, then compare:

MT = 15,000 lbs x 1 kg___ x 1 MT = 6.80 MT

2.2046 lbs 1 000 kg

c) Therefore:

RT = 7.20 RT
GIVEN :20 ctns-assorted tools
Dimension : 20 cm x 60 cm x 90 cm/ctn
Gr. Wt/ctn : 90 kgs

FIND : RT
SOLUTION:

a) Solve for MT

MT = 90 kgs/ctn x 20 ctns = 1.80 MT

1,000 kgs/MT

b) Solve for VW, then compare:

VW = 20 cm x 60 cm x 90 cm x 20 ctns = 2.16 CBM

ctn

c) Therefore:

RT = 2.16 RT
GIVEN: : 50 boxes - Various Footwear
Dimension : 6” x 8” x 16”/box
Gr. Wt. : 275 lbs

FIND : RT
SOLUTION:

a) Solve for MT

MT = 275 lbs x 0.4536 kgs/lb = 0.125 MT

1,000 kgs/MT

b) Solve for VW, then compare:

VW = 6” x 8” x 16”/ box x 1 CBM x 50 boxes = 0.630 CBM

1,728 in³ / CUFT 35.29 CUFT

c) Therefore:

RT = 0.630 RT
