VHF DSC Distress Alert

Upon receiving a DSC distress alert on VHF/MF, a ship should listen on channel 16/2182 kHz for 5 minutes to check if the alert is acknowledged by a coast station or rescue coordination center. If not acknowledged, the ship determines if distress traffic is in progress and if the distress call continues. If able, the ship acknowledges the alert by radio and informs authorities if unable to assist.
