Chem 26.1 EXPERIMENT 3 - GUIDE QUESTIONS

This document provides instructions and questions for an experiment on the iodine clock reaction. The experiment involves collecting rate data for the reaction of iodide (I-) and persulfate (S2O82-) under varying conditions. Graphs of the reaction rate should be made using the collected data to determine the rate order with respect to each reactant and the activation energy. The document also provides proposed reaction mechanisms and asks the student to determine which mechanism is consistent with the experimentally determined rate law.

CHEM 26.

1
ATQ GUIDE: EXPERIMEN 3 – IODINE CLOCK REACTION

DATA TREATMENT
Prepare the following graphs:
1. ln rate versus ln[S2O82-] for runs 2,4, and 5 (constant [I-]) with the slope of the line equal to the rate
order of S2O82-
2. ln rate versus ln[I-] for runs 1, 2, and 3 (constant [S2O82-]) with the slope of the line equal to the rate
order of I-
3. The reaction constant k.
4. ln k versus 1/T for sets 1, 2, and 3 of run 2 with the slope multiplied with -R equal to the activation
energy

CALCULATIONS
Determine:
1. For each trial, the concentration of each reactants and miscellaneous reagents on the reaction
mixtures.
2. The reaction rate for each setup (M/s) using the concentration of S2O32- since it acts as the limiting
reactant
3. rate law for reaction between I- and S2O82-
4. activation energy and Arrhenius constant for the reaction

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. Why is it important to do kinetic experiments and extract kinetic parameters from chemical
reactions?
2. How did the following affect the reaction rate? Explain.
a. Concentration of S2O82-
b. Concentration of I-
c. Temperature
d. Addition of CuSO4
3. What is the use of adding S2O32- on beaker B?
4. What caused the change in color of the reaction mixture from colorless to blue?
5. What is the significance of the calculated activation energy and Arrhenius constant?
6. Which mechanism is consistent with your rate law? Defend your answer.
a. Proposed mechanism 1:
I-(aq) + I-(aq) →*[I…I]2-(aq)
* [I…I]2-(aq) + S2O82-(aq) → I2(aq) + 2SO42-(aq)

b. Proposed mechanism 2:

I-(aq) + S2O82-(aq) *[I…S2O8]3-(aq)

*[I…S2O8]3-(aq) + I- → I2(aq) + 2 SO42-(aq)

c. Proposed mechanism 3:

I-(aq) + S2O82-(aq)→*[I…S2O8]3-(aq)

*[I…S2O8]3-(aq) + I- → I2(aq) + 2 SO42-(aq)

d. Proposed mechanism 4:

2I-(aq) + S2O82-(aq) → I2(aq) + 2SO42-(aq)

7. How do your results compare to previous studies? If your results are significantly different, suggests
possible source of the discrepancy.
