Presenting a range of original perspectives on the theoretical work of Canadian architect George
Baird, this publication constructs for the first time a critical framework of his contribution to
architectural discourse over a period of more than 50 years. The influence of his writing on more
recent scholarly work is also addressed. The book includes previously unpublished essays and
interviews with key protagonists, among them Peter Eisenman and Kenneth Frampton, who have
enjoyed intellectual exchanges with Baird. In total, eighteen contributors converge on Baird's
complex career as an example of the architect's public engagement in contemporary society.

This tenth volume on Morocco completes the 'Villages and Towns' series, which after its initial
publication 40 years ago has now been reproduced in its entirety. Learn about the regional
architecture and urban features of this magical North African country by diving into the casbah,
the medina, and the souk. Revisit the caravan stopover of Ait-Ben-Haddou, see the fortified
Berber city of Goulmima and the massive mudbrick walls of Afanour, marvel at the light and
pattern in Marrakech, and get lost in the narrow, labyrinthine streets of the ancient capital of Fes.
Yukio Futagawa's faithful account and photos bring the traditional layout and design of Moroccan
settlements to life.

Once again, architecture is looking at itself in the mirror. Theorists and practitioners are
reorienting the field's tools and methods to address social complexity at the scales of both
systemic conditions and interpersonal exchange. These expanding modes of practice suggest
that the centre of architecture is shifting and cannot hold. Approaching this shift in multiple ways,
contributors Bryony Roberts (introduction), Peggy Deamer (feminist architecture), Katy Barkan
(reshuffling hierarchies), Ana Miljacki (collective learning), Jia Yi Gu (cultivating care), Mabel O.
Wilson (decolonising practice), Margo Handwerker (parsing social practice), and others weigh in
on the issue.

AV Proyectos 97 devotes its dossier to the Stockholm-based young studio Tham & Videgard,
whose experimental and innovative proposals reconcile Swedish tradition and the most
contemporary international architecture. The issue also collects the twelve first prizes obtained by
Spanish teams in Europan 15. The following section examines four examples of refurbishment in
the traditional hutongs of Beijing, carried out by some of the most prominent Chinese offices:
Vector, Archstudio, ZAO/standardarchitecture, and MAD Studio.

Since its founding in 1989, the Berlin practice of Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton has
successfully combined a scrupulous attention to programs with an artistic bent that translates into
an unprejudiced use of colour in large corporate and cultural buildings designed, too, with a
strong caring for the environment, as we can see in the three buildings presented in detail in this
issue of Arquitectura Viva: The District M9 Museum in Mestre (Venice), the enlarged Experimenta
Museum in Heilbronn (Germany), and the student apartments in Hamburg.

Since the turn of the century, the brothers of Lisbon-based practice Aires Mateus have expanded
their formal and material repertoire, blurring the limits of the building with the exterior, the
topography, or the existing. Such an enrichment of the architectural vocabulary combines the
abstraction of their beginnings with many figurative references extracted from the historic and the
vernacular. This issue celebrates their innovation with 20 works completed since 2000. The
selection features numerous private homes but also the School of Architecture in Tournai
(Belgium), the EDP Headquarters in Lisbon, and the Furnas Monitoring and Research Centre,
located in the Azores.

This instalment of the magazine examines the application of computational design and digital
fabrication across a spectrum of materials and scales, from a free-form high-rise exoskeleton by
Zaha Hadid Architects or biomimetic wearables by Neri Oxman and the Mediated Matter Group at
MIT, to the printed structure of a nonstandard brick, developed by Sabin Lab at Cornell
University. With a selection of fourteen projects by designers and architects working in cross-
disciplinary ways, it explores what can be achieved by "thinking digitally" and raises questions
about the relationship between natural systems, digital technology, and the shaping of the
material environment.

This month the magazine had planned to present a special issue about the European Union Prize
for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award, which marks its 34th anniversary in
2021. Yet while reviewing the many award-winning projects through the years, the editors were
struck by architecture's wonder and power. In response to the global pandemic, they decided to
turn their focus on celebrating the hope and encouragement that architecture provides. The issue
covers all of the shortlisted works and jury proceedings for each edition of the award, and
highlights eight works from the Mies Foundation's "Art Intervention" initiative at the Barcelona
Pavilion.

With the launch of the new Acne Studios headquarters in Stockholm, 'A Magazine Curated By'
presents a survey of this exceptional building and its present function as a fashion atelier and
corporate office. In a visual essay by French architecture photographer Philippe Chancel, the
building is explored from top to bottom, beginning with the management offices and descending
ten storeys through each component of the design and production ateliers, communal spaces,
photo studio, and more. The images are accompanied by insightful quotes by Acne Studios
creative director Jonny Johansson, architect Johannes Norlander, the studio's teams, and
external collaborators.

The new generation of Mexican architecture is represented by Taller Hector Barroso and Estudio
Macias Peredo, two offices whose work emerges in harmony with the surrounding site,
generating spaces with an emotional content that evoke memory and highlight the habitable
quality of their architecture. Projects by the former, established by Barroso in Mexico City in 2011,
often take advantage of the natural resources of each place, including local materials and
construction methods. Estudio Macias Peredo was launched in 2012 in Guadalajara, with a
special focus on the local context. This developing interest has become the central theme of their
approach.

Following the magazine's three previous features on Dutch architects MVDRV over the past two
decades, this fourth special issue focuses on the office's ambitions to conceptualise sustainable
"future-proof" buildings and cities. An essay by the principals appears alongside a roundtable
discussion with its new partners, as well as 23 projects that demonstrate their visionary ideas
about redefining the spaces we use every day. Among the featured built and unbuilt works are
KoolKiel in Germany, Tirana Pyramid, Tianjin Binhai Library, Roskilde Festival Folk High School,
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the new neighbourhood of Ilot Queryries in
Bordeaux, and more.

A magazine focusing on the architectural process, 'DOMa' aims to revisit architecture in a more
informed and elaborate manner, to understand and criticise it from within. These days we are
often pushed to simply consume the final architectural product. The creative process is frequently
overlooked, and only too seldom recorded in the media. With the launch of its first issue, this
Athens-based independent institution for contemporary architecture looks at OE House by Fake
Industries Architectural Agonism and Aixopluc, MAIO's 22 Dwellings Housing Block in Barcelona,
Hunters Point Library by Steven Holl Architects, and the subtle mutations of the House with

This weighty monograph is the culmination of the cooperation between architect Tadao Ando and
Oris, a Croatian publishing house, who together have built a respectful relationship since a first
interview about ten years ago, one that has led to the publication of many of his projects around
the world. Now all of these projects and writings are brought together for the first time in this
book, a portrait of uncompromising dedication to architecture and openness to cultural exchange.
It is divided in four sections: architecture and nature, urban conditions, dwelling, and cross-
cultural dialogues. The book includes an introduction by Juhani Pallasmaa and an interview with
Ando.

Guest editor Yasuhiro Teramatsu turns this issue's focus on the turbulent 1970s. Precluded by
the May Revolution of 1968 - a turning point for post-war society that encompassed many social
and cultural reforms - the following decade's sense of crisis and uncertainty nevertheless played
out alongside a period of new thinking and experimentation in the architectural field. Historian of
architectural theory Harry F. Mallgrave offers an analysis of the discourses that were particularly
important and their connections to architecture, while taking into account the zeitgeist of this
transformative period. Featuring numerous exemplary works, the result is a vital cross-section of
the decade.

Belgian architect Xaveer de Geyter is the focus of this issue, which features a selection of
projects from the past fifteen years. He began his career working with Rem Koolhaas at OMA,
and started his own firm in the early 1990s. De Geyter believes architecture is about opening up
possibilities: the potential of a site, the hidden opportunity of a particular situation, of a
programmatic conflict. Among the featured projects are Hasselt's Z33 Museum, Sint-Lucas
School of Fine Arts in Ghent, a learning and innovation centre in Brussels, and a design for the
International Olympic Committee Headquarters. Includes an interview with the architect by Sarah
Whiting and essay by Philip Ursprung.

In contrast to the Western world, furniture does not have much of a presence within traditional
Japanese architecture. Kengo Kuma believes that this unique stance towards furniture is not due
solely to the practice of sitting on tatami matting on the floor, but rather also stems from the
transparent nature of this architecture. Bringing large furniture with a strong presence into
transparent spaces such as these would ruin the carefully crafted aesthetic. Over the centuries,
Japanese designers have sought sophisticated designs that minimise scale and create delicate
pieces. In this book, Kuma explores how to design modern furniture as an extension of these
innovations.

'Holz Bau' is a study conducted by a small architectural office in Tokyo on German timber
architecture. It began with a hunch, a feeling of disconnection between conventional timber
construction and traditional methods when designing timber buildings in Japan. The first part
features a reissue of a pre-war architectural magazine that served as source material and
inspiration to explore further. The second contains photographs of researched buildings, with
plans and sections newly created for this book. Lastly, essays about the technical history and
potential of timber engineering, plus conversations with architect Go Hasegawa and German
architect Jan Theissen of AMUNT.

After every catastrophe, whether natural or caused by humans, the importance of the building
context and its effects in any environmental disaster becomes clear. This is also true in
humanitarian disasters resulting from war and conflict, as well as social hardship, and in most
cases is related to problematic living conditions. Each time, architecture is shown to occupy an
essential role. Its contribution, however, is not limited to pinpointing the appropriate quality of a
building or settlement; its scope can go significantly beyond, offering tools to analyse pre- and
post-disaster phenomena. Authors Roberta Lucente and Nicoletta Trasi examine this in their
topical research.

This issue presents dialogues on tools and methods that can address energy transition in the
Mediterranean region. It is based on the experiences of two Erasmus Programme projects, both
partnered and coordinated with Roma Tre University in Italy. The projects, E-Resplan and
Eneplan, deal with integrated energy planning - a set of approaches, processes, and practices
that bring together multidisciplinary contributions to manifold energy issues. The book covers a
range of issues bridging approaches to energy transition led by energy efficiency targets, such as
building stock retrofitting, and by trends in decarbonisation, energy security requirements, and
environmental concerns.

This booklet presents architecture in a manner rarely seen today: sketches drawn by hand. A
sketch captures architecture through the eyes of its author, and this personal aspect is what
makes it so valuable. Here, the sketch also serves as a tool to illustrate the fundamental concepts
of designs by Slovene architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957), who gave the city of Ljubljana its
modern identity through his iconic buildings and urban plans, which reflect a timeless aesthetic
and qualities. Plecnik holds a special place among his Slovenian peers, and the complex project
of nominating his architectural work for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List is this
book's starting point.
