Sapthagiri College of Engineering, Bangalore - 57: Answer The Following Questions

This document contains an assignment for a Principles of Communication Systems course. It includes 10 questions about amplitude modulation techniques like DSB-SC, VSB, and FDM. Students are asked to explain generation and demodulation of various AM waves using diagrams and equations, discuss the frequency spectrum of modulated waves, and analyze AM modulation factors for sample signals. They must also derive the modulated signal output of a tuned RLC circuit and explain how to obtain the modulating signal from the output of a square rooter in an AM system block diagram. Responses are due by September 30th, 2020.

Answer the following questions

1) Explain the generation of DSB-SC wave using Ring Modulator.

2) Explain the working of Costas Receiver for demodulating DSB-SC wave.

3) Explain with block diagrams, Quadrature Carrier Multiplexing and de-multiplexing system.

4) Explain the scheme of for generation and demodulation of VSB signals with relevant block
diagrams and mathematical expressions.

5) What is the importance of the VSB system? Explain the spectrum of VSB modulated wave
containing a vestige of the LSB with frequency domain description.

6) Explain the frequency translation technique.

7) What is FDM? Explain the detailed scheme of FDM.

8 ) For an AM modulator with a 75 MHz carrier having amplitude of 50 V is modulated by a

3 kHz audio signal having amplitude of 20 V.

(i) Sketch the audio signal.

(ii) Sketch the carrier.
(iii) Construct the modulated wave.
(iv) Determine the modulation factor and percent modulation.
(v) Identify the frequency content of AM signal and draw the frequency spectrum diagram.
(vi) Find the trigonometric equations for the carrier and the modulating waves.
(vii) Find the total power PT and side-band powers if the AM system has a load of 100Ώ.

9) A carrier wave of frequency 1 MHz is modulated 50% by sinusoidal frequency 5 kHz. The
resulting AM signal is transmitted through a parallel RLC resonant circuit which is tuned to the
carrier frequency and has a Q factor of 175. Determine the modulated signal after transmission
through this circuit. What is the % modulation of this modulated signal?

10) Figure shows the block diagram of a AM system with s(t) = AC[1+kam(t)]cos2fct and
|kam(t)| < 1 for all t. Also m(t) is a band limited is a signal in the interval (–W < f < W) and
fc > 2W. Show that m(t) can be obtained from the square rooter output.
