his brother Paciano and his brother-in-law Silvestre Ubaldo who said that there may
be some people who might try to harm him.
2. Compare the Attitudes of Governor General Emilio Terrero and the Archbishop of Manila Pedro
Payo regarding the Noli Me Tangere? Why was there a difference in their reactions?
Answer: Governor Terrero found nothing wrong about the novel after reading it.
While Archbishop of Manila Pedro Payo denounced the Noli as “heretical,
impromptus and scandalous in the religious order after the committee sent a report.
3. How did Rizal spend his time in Calamba? How did the people receive him?
Answer: Rizal established a medical clinic in Calamba, opened a gymnasium in
Calamba also wherein he tried to generate interest among people in sports such as
fencing, shootimg and gymnastics in hopes to discourage town mates from idleness and
gambling. And also, he took part in Calamba’s civic affairs and made painting of the
town’s landscape and translated the German poems of Von Wildernath into Tagalog.
4. What prompted Rizal to leave the Philippines? How did his experience during his brief visit change
him?
Answer: The friars exerted pressure on then Governor General Terrero to have him
arrested or deported. The Governor refused to act seeing that there was no valid cause
to arrest him and he summoned Rizal to Malacanang and advised to leave the
Philippines for his ow good.

1. What was the protesta de Calamba? What was Rizal’s role in this event? Discuss your answer and
provide specific example from the event that relates to the present situation of the Philippines.
Potesta de Calamba is that the Dominican landholdings comprises not only the lands
around Calamba but the whole town itself, including the houses of the people lived there. But not
only Calamba was controlled by Dominicans, but also the town of Binan, San Pedro and Sta. Rosa.
The Dominican landlords banned the tenants and increase rents for increase income. furthermore,
the income from the landholdings of the Dominicans didn’t easily enrich the Dominican order as
rent earned from those land will be used for maintaining the churches and the other institutions.
And Rizal was also involved to this issue where he helped draft an informative report on the
agrarian situation there.
This kind of problems or issues also still existed in this present time. Where in people
taking advantages of their power in order to gain more income.

- The reason why Rizal went to Sandakan in Borneo because the British North Borneo
Company were looking for settlers who would develop a new colony. He wanted not
only the Filipino farmers to migrate there, but also Filipino fisherman and teach the
natives to farm and fish.
3. What did the Spanish authorities do to make sure Rizal will never leave the Philippines?
Elaborate your answer.
A case was filed accusing Rizal of anti-religious and anti-patriotic agitation. And the
Spanish governor general Eulogio Despujo made sure that Rizal was not a naturalize
German citizen in order not to involve the German empire if Rizal was arrested.
