Plate No. 8: Power Transmitted in An Open Belt Drive

An open belt connects two pulleys 2.4m apart, with the larger pulley being 450mm in diameter rotating at 120 rpm, and the smaller pulley being 300mm in diameter. Given the belt is 100mm wide, has a coefficient of friction of 0.3, and a maximum stress of 14N/mm, the problem is to find the power transmitted between the pulleys.

PLATE NO.

8: POWER TRANSMITTED IN AN OPEN BELT DRIVE

ILLUSTRATION:

PROBLEM:
An open belt 100mm wide connects two pulleys mounted on parallel shafts with their centers
2.4m apart. The diameter of the larger pulley is 450mm and that of the smaller pulley 300mm.
The coefficient of friction is 0.3 and the maximum stress in the belt is limited to 14N/mm per
width. If the larger pulley rotates at 120 rpm, find the power transmitted.
