Electromagnetic Spectrum Quiz Answers PDF

This document provides a worksheet on the electromagnetic spectrum. It asks students to label parts of a wave, identify characteristics of waves at different ends of the spectrum such as wavelength and frequency, and fill in names of the different types of electromagnetic radiation in order from longest to shortest wavelength. It also asks students to identify colors in the visible light spectrum based on their wavelength and energy. Finally, it asks students questions to assess their understanding of the relationships between wavelength, frequency, and energy.

NAME_____________________________________________________________ HOUR_______

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Label the parts of a wave using the terms: crest, trough, frequency, wavelength, amplitude
wavelength
1. ______________________

trough
2. ______________________

amplitude
3. ______________________

crest
4. ______________________

5. ______________________
frequency

6. Circle the appropriate words to describe the waves at the LEFT end of this wave spectrum

a. Long / Short wavelength

b. High / Low frequency
c. High / Low energy

7. Circle the appropriate words to describe the waves at the RIGHT end of this wave spectrum

a. Long / Short wavelength

b. High / Low frequency
c. High / Low energy
8. Fill in the blanks underneath the wave spectrum to indicate the relative positions of each type of
electromagnetic radiation from the given word bank.
gamma ultraviolet visible x-rays

microwaves infrared radio/tv

Radio Micro Infrared Visible Ultraviolet X-ray Gamma

9. Look carefully at the electromagnetic spectrum shown below paying attention to the wavelengths
and frequencies indicated. The visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum has been enlarged
below the spectrum. Fill in the blanks with the correct colors from the visible spectrum according to
their wavelength, frequency and energy.

Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red

10. Circle the correct answer

a. Which has a longer wavelength? Microwaves or Infrared

b. Which has a lower frequency? X rays or Gamma rays

c. Which has a higher frequency? Visible or Ultraviolet

d. Which has more energy? Radio/TV or Infrared

e. Which has more energy? Red light or Green light

f. Which has a higher frequency? Orange light or Blue light

g. Which has a shorter wavelength? Ultraviolet or X rays

11. The radio station Z107.7 broadcasts radio waves. What do the numbers 107.7 represent?

The station numbers represent the frequency of the radio wave being emitted. They are
measured in mega hertz (MHz)

12. Compare the radio waves broadcast by the two stations, WIL-92.3 and KSHE-94.7

a. Which station broadcasts waves with more energy?

KSHE 94.7

b. Which station broadcasts waves with a shorter wavelength?

KSHE 94.7

c. Which station broadcasts waves with a higher frequency?

KSHE 94.7

13. What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength?

Frequency and wavelength are inversely related. If the wavelength is longer, the frequency is
less. A shorter wavelength has a greater frequency.
14. What is the relationship between frequency and energy?
They are proportionally related. As one becomes greater, so does the other. Energy of a wave
is measured by its frequency.
15. What is the relationship between wavelength and energy?
They are inversely related. Because energy is measured using frequency, and wavelength is
inversely related to frequency; this means that wavelength and energy are also inversely
related. As wavelength gets longer, there is less energy.
