WORLD WIDE WEB The World Wide Web (abbreviated as the Web or WWW) is a system of
Internet servers that supports hypertext to access several Internet protocols on a single
interface. Almost every protocol type available on the Internet is accessible on the Web. This
includes e-mail, FTP, Telnet, and Usenet News. In addition to these, the World Wide Web has its
own protocol: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. These protocols will be explained later in
this document. The World Wide Web provides a single interface for accessing all these
protocols. This creates a convenient and user – friendly environment. It is no longer necessary
to be conversant in these protocols within separate, command – level environments. The Web
gathers together these protocols into a single system. Because of this feature, and because of
the Web’s ability to work with multimedia and advanced programming language, the Web is
the fastestgrowing component of the Internet. The operation of the Web relies primarily on
hypertext as its means of information retrieval. Hyper Text is a document containing words that
connect to other documents. These words are called links and are selectable by the user. A
single hypertext document can contain links to many documents. In the context of the Web,
words or graphics may serve as links to other documents, images, video, and sound. Links may
or may not follow a logical path, as each connection is programmed by the creator of the
source document. Overall, the Web contains a complex virtual web of connections among a
vast number of documents, graphics, videos, and sounds. Producing hypertext for the Web is
accomplished by creating documents with a language called Hyper Text Markup Language, or
HTML. With HTML, tags are placed within the text to accomplish document formatting, visual
features such as font size, italics and bold, and the creation of hypertext links. Graphics and
multimedia may also be incorporated into an HTML document. HTML is an evolving language,
with new tags being added as each upgrade of the language is developed and released. The
World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), led by Web founder Tim Berners-Lee, coordinates the
efforts of standardizing HTML. The W3C now calls the language XHTML and considers it to be an
application of the XML language standard. The World Wide Web consists of files, called pages
or home pages, containing links to documents and resources throughout the Internet. The Web
provides a vast array of experiences including multimedia presentations, real-time
collaboration, interactive pages, radio and television broadcasts, and the automatic “push” of
information to a client computer. Programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic,
Cold Fusion and XML are extending the capabilities of the Web. A growing amount of
information on the Web is served dynamically from content stored in databases. The Web is
therefore not a fixed entity, but one that is in a constant state of development and flux.

E-MAIL
Electronic mail, or e-mail, allows computer users locally and worldwide to exchange messages.
Each user of e-mail has a mailbox address to which messages are sent. Messages sent though e-
mail can arrive within a matter of seconds. A powerful aspect of e-mail is the option to send
electronic files to a person’s e-mail address. Non – ASCII files, known as binary files, may be
attached to e-mail messages. These files are referred to as MIME attachments. MIME stands for
Multimedia Internet Mail Extension, and was developed to help e-mail software handle a
variety of file types. For example, a document created in Microsoft Outlook, offer the ability to
read files written in HTML, which is itself a MIME type.

FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is both a program and the method used to transfer files
between computers. Anonymous FTP is an option that allows users to transfer files from thousands of
host computers on the Internet to their personal computer account. FTP sites contain books, articles,
software, games, images, sounds, multimedia, course work, data sets, and more. If your computer is
directly connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable, you can use one of several PC software
programs, such as WS_FTP for Windows, to conduct a file transfer. FTP transfers can be performed on
the World Wide Web without the need for special software. In this case, the Web browser will suffice.
Whenever you download software from a Wed site to your local machine, you are using FTP. You can
also retrieve FTP files via search engines such as FtpFind, located at http://WWW.ftpfind.com/THis
option is easiest because you do not need to know FTP program commands.

HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) : The language of the World Wide Web...a set of codes that tells a
computer how to display the text, graphics, and other objects that comprise a web page. The central
functional element of HTML is the Hyper Text link, which is a word or picture you can click on to retrieve
another web page and display it on your computer screen.

IP address: A computer’s unique Internet address, which usually looks like this: 128.223.142.14. Most
computers also have a domain name assigned to them, which represents cryptic IP addresses with
words that are easier to remember (e.g.,gladstone.uoregon.edu). mailing list. An email-based forum for
discussing a particular topic. Mailing lists are administrated by a central program that distributes
messages to all participants

URL (Uniform Resource Locator): A fancy term for the address of a World Wide Web page or other
resource. World Wide Web: A system of linked servers that distribute text, graphics, and multimedia
information to users all over the world.

What is meant by HTTP server?

Definition: A web server is a computer that runs websites. It's a computer program that
distributes web pages as they are requisitioned. The basic objective of the web
server is to store, process and deliver web pages to the users. This intercommunication
is done using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

A HTTP or web server processes requests via HTTP, a network protocol used to exchange

information on the World Wide Web (WWW). The main function of a HTTP server is to store,
process and deliver web pages to clients.

http-server: a command-line http server

1. Globally via npm. npm install --global http-server. ...
2. Globally via Homebrew. brew install http-server.
3. Running on-demand: Using npx you can run the script without installing it first:
npx http-server [path] [options]
4. As a dependency in your npm package: npm install http-server.
5. What's the difference between WWW and HTTP?
6. Simply put, HTTP is the protocol that enables communication online, transferring
data from one machine to another. WWW is the set of linked hypertext
documents that can be viewed on web browsers (such as Firefox, Google
Chrome, and more).
7. Why server is used?
8. Servers can provide various functionalities, often called "services", such as
sharing data or resources among multiple clients, or performing computation for
a client. A single server can serve multiple clients, and a single client can use
multiple servers.
HTTP is a generic and stateless protocol which can be used for other purposes as well using
extensions of its request methods, error codes, and headers. Basically, HTTP is a TCP/IP
based communication protocol, that is used to deliver data (HTML files, image files, query
results, etc.) on the World Wide Web.

Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol." HTTP is the protocol used to transfer data over the
web. ... HTTP uses a server-client model. A client, for example, may be a home computer,
laptop, or mobile device. The HTTP server is typically a web host running web server software,
such as Apache or IIS.May 28, 2015

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

Why is http needed?

HTTP stands for hypertext transfer protocol. It's a protocol that allows communication
between different systems. Most commonly, it is used for transferring data from a web
server to a browser to view web pages. ... Without HTTPS, any data passed is
insecure.Sep 15, 2016
What are the types of servers?
Types of servers
 File servers. File servers store and distribute files. ...
 Print servers. Print servers allow for the management and distribution of printing
functionality. ...
 Application servers. ...
 Web servers. ...
 Database servers. ...
 Virtual servers. ...
 Proxy servers. ...
 Monitoring and management servers.
 What is HTTP format?
 HTTP messages are how data is exchanged between a server and a client.
There are two types of messages: requests sent by the client to trigger an action
on the server, and responses, the answer from the server. HTTP messages are
composed of textual information encoded in ASCII, and span over multiple
lines.Jul 4, 2020
How HTTP works step by step?
I have devided the tcpdump output of our sample http request to
different steps below, for easy understanding.
1. Step 1: Establishing a TCP connection to the server by the client. ...
2. Step 2: Initiating a HTTP GET Request by the client to the server. ...
3. Step 3: HTTP Server Response to a HTTP GET Request.
4. How does HTTP get work?
5. As a request-response protocol, HTTP gives users a way to interact with web
resources such as HTML files by transmitting hypertext messages between
clients and servers. HTTP clients generally use Transmission Control Protocol
(TCP) connections to communicate with servers.

Definition of 'Web Server'

Definition: A web server is a computer that runs websites. It's a computer program that
distributes web pages as they are requisitioned. The basic objective of the web server is to
store, process and deliver web pages to the users. This intercommunication is done using
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). These web pages are mostly static content that includes
HTML documents, images, style sheets, test etc. Apart from HTTP, a web server also supports
SMTP (Simple Mail transfer Protocol) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) protocol for emailing and
for file transfer and storage.

Description: The main job of a web server is to display the website content. If a web server is
not exposed to the public and is used internally, then it is called Intranet Server. When anyone
requests for a website by adding the URL or web address on a web browser’s (like Chrome or
Firefox) address bar (like www.economictimes.com), the browser sends a request to the
Internet for viewing the corresponding web page for that address. A Domain Name Server
(DNS) converts this URL to an IP Address (For example 192.168.216.345), which in turn points
to a Web Server.

The Web Server is requested to present the content website to the user’s browser. All websites
on the Internet have a unique identifier in terms of an IP address. This Internet Protocol address
is used to communicate between different servers across the Internet. These days, Apache
server is the most common web server available in the market. Apache is an open source
software that handles almost 70 percent of all websites available today. Most of the web-based
applications use Apache as their default Web Server environment. Another web server that is
generally available is Internet Information Service (IIS). IIS is owned by Microsoft.

A web server is server software, or hardware dedicated to running this software, that can

satisfy client requests on the World Wide Web. A web server can, in general, contain one or
more websites. A web server processes incoming network requests over HTTP and several other
related protocols.
The primary function of a web server is to store, process and deliver web pages to clients.[1] The
communication between client and server takes place using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
Pages delivered are most frequently HTML documents, which may include images, style
sheets and scripts in addition to the text content.
Multiple web servers may be used for a high traffic website; here, Dell servers are installed together being used
for the Wikimedia Foundation.

A user agent, commonly a web browser or web crawler, initiates communication by making a

request for a specific resource using HTTP and the server responds with the content of that resource
or an error message if unable to do so. The resource is typically a real file on the server's secondary
storage, but this is not necessarily the case and depends on how the web server is implemented.
While the major function is to serve content, a full implementation of HTTP also includes ways of
receiving content from clients. This feature is used for submitting web forms, including uploading of
files.
Many generic web servers also support server-side scripting using Active Server
Pages (ASP), PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor), or other scripting languages. This means that the
behaviour of the web server can be scripted in separate files, while the actual server software
remains unchanged. Usually, this function is used to generate HTML documents dynamically ("on-
the-fly") as opposed to returning static documents. The former is primarily used for retrieving or
modifying information from databases. The latter is typically much faster and more easily cached but
cannot deliver dynamic content.
Web servers can frequently be found embedded in devices such as printers, routers, webcams and
serving only a local network. The web server may then be used as a part of a system for monitoring
or administering the device in question. This usually means that no additional software has to be
installed on the client computer since only a web browser is required (which now is included with
most operating systems).
