ALTERNATE ENDING OF THE STORY “THE GIFT OF MAGI”

POINT OF VIEW: IF DELLA FOUND OUT THAT JIM WOULD BUY HER A COMB

Narrator: Like pendulum balls, Della paced back and forth inside their home. She looks

out the window sadly as she notices that the darkness slowly eats the day. She turns her

gaze into their clock. It’s almost dinner time. She decides to go and find her husband.

Della: Where could Jim be? I must swiftly walk to the streets of London to find him.

Narrator: As if her feet had wings, Della trotted down the streets, into the alleys, and

finally outside the window of the beautiful store where combs are sold, she found her dear

husband.

At first, she was skeptic like a curious little kitten. But as she observed, she realized that

her husband is going to purchase the expensive combs she has been dying to have!

Della: But where will he get money for it? We have been short of finances these past few

days!

Narrator: So Della promptly walked to her husband and confronted him gently.

Della: Jim, my dear! Are you going to buy these beautiful combs for me?

Jim: Ah, yes, Della! I was supposed to surprise you!

Della: But dear, how are you going to pay for these lovely combs? We have been short of

finances lately.
Jim: I was checking how much all these would cost so I can find a good price of the watch

my father used to give me. Afterall, it’s Christmas time dear! It’s a one in a million holiday.

Della: Jim, our love grows sweeter as days go by, just as wines taste better as it ages.

But darling, I don’t need you to splurge much for a gift. I can wait until we have better

budget. Christmas gifts don’t always have to be material things, this year we can share a

simple celebration together. We can do better next time!

Jim: Della, you are a wise woman and I thank God because you have always been like

that. Let’s buy some cheese and soup for dinner then. Let’s go home now.

Narrator: and together, the couple happily went home together as they share a simple

and practical holiday together.
