Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and hasn’t been used on
more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow.
Windows users know how annoying updating their laptops or PCs can be but you know it
is one of the effective ways to keep hackers at bay. Security updates are crucial in this
algorithm and can prevent you from the plague of viruses, malware, and different kinds of
cyber threats that might attack your system.
Reason #3: Bug Fixes and Patches
If your computer or laptop running on Windows 10 has automatic updates enabled, you
might not know when your computer downloaded any updates and installed them.
Windows 10 receives a tonne of bug fixes and patches on the way until it is supported by
Microsoft.

Customizing Server
Let the student share his or her answers and ideas on the questions inside
the box provided. Processed the student responses and then present the next lesson
to be discuss.

What are the server roles in Windows Server 2008?
Windows Server 2008 is designed around certain roles and features. A role is a primary
duty that a server performs. For example, you typically would point at a server and say
"that's my domain controller (DC) and DNS server."
A feature is something that helps a server perform its primary duty (Windows Backup,
network load balancing). Certain roles are comprised of sub-elements called Role
Services, which are distinct units of functionality.
Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is a server role in Active Directory that allows
admins to manage and store information about resources from a network, as well as
application data, in a distributed database.
An organizational unit (OU) is a container within a Microsoft Active Directory domain which can
hold users, groups and computers.
Steps in adding Active Directory Domain Services roles
1. Click the Server Manager icon on the task bar or select Start -> Programs ->
Administrative Tools -> Server Manager
2. In Server Manager right click Roles and select Add Roles from the pop-menu.
NOTE: You can also click the Add Roles icon on the right pane
3. In Add Roles Wizard, click Server Roles on the left pane
4. In the Roles pane, click Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS)
o Click Add required features
o Click Next
o Click Install
o Click close
Benefits and importance of Active Directory Domain Services
There are several benefits to using AD DS for your basic network user and
computer management.
1. You can customize how your data is organized to meet your companies
needs
2. You can manage AD DS from any computer on the network, if necessary
3. AD DS provides built in replication and redundancy: if one Domain Controller
(DC) fails, another DC picks up the load
4. All access to network resources goes through AD DS, which keeps network
access rights management centralized
What Services are Provided in Active Directory Domain Services?
Here are the services that AD DS provides as the core functionality required by a
centralized user management system.
10
2. Certificate Services: Allows your DC to serve digital certificates, signatures,
and public key cryptography.
3. Lightweight Directory Services: Supports LDAP for cross platform domain
services, like any Linux computers in your network.
4. Directory Federation Services: Provides SSO authentication for multiple
applications in the same session, so users don’t have to keep providing the
same credentials.
5. Rights Management: Controls information rights and data access policies.
For example, Rights Management determines if you can access a folder or
send an email.
Now that you have an idea about adding active directory domain services roles,
let’s try your understanding by answering activity 1. Please do it wholeheartedly.

IV. Reflection
Now that you have understood on how to add active directory domain
services roles, I want you to answer the last question for your reflection.
Day 4:
I. Mini Lesson / Lecturette
Let the student share his or her answers and ideas on the questions inside
the box provided. Processed the student responses and then present the next lesson
to be discuss.
What is DNS?
The Domain Name System or DNS is an essential service that allows your computer
to find other computers and services on the network. Active directory relies on DNS
and can't not run without it. It is important to understand how DNS work to support any
active directory environment.
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming
system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a
private network.
12
What is dcpromo?
dcpromo (Domain Controller Promoter) is a tool in Active Directory that installs and removes
Active Directory Domain Services and promotes domain controllers. dcpromo, which builds forests
and domains in Active Directory, is found in every version of Windows Server since Windows 2000.
dcpromo is command you have to write it in Run to create a new domain controller and create
active directory.
What is a domain or a forest name?
A forest is a collection of domains. When you create a new domain, you choose whether
to make it the root domain of a new forest, or to make it part of an existing forest.
The forest name is the DNS name of the root domain of the forest, i.e., the first domain
that was created in the forest.
So, the forest name and the DNS name will be the same if and only if the domain is the
forest root domain.
Domain is a logical group of computers that share a central directory service.
What is a domain controller?
A domain controller is a machine that’s runs active directory services.
Think of it as a boss of your network.
What is a forest?
Is comprised of all the domain in your enterprise. Your forest may only one domain.
Installation of dcpromo.exe
1. Select Start and enter "dcpromo" in the search field, then click dcpromo in the search
results.
2. The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard appears. On the
welcome screen, click Next. Do not select Use advanced mode installation.
3. The Operating System Compatibility informational screen appears. Read it and
click Next.
4. The Choose a Deployment Configuration screen appears. Click Create a new domain
in a new forest and then click Next.
5. The Name the Forest Root Domain screen appears.
Enter a fully qualified domain name for the forest root domain. Click Next.
6. The Set Forest Functional Level screen appears. Select "Windows Server 2008 R2
and then click Next.
7. The Additional Domain Controller Options screen appears.
Make sure DNS server is selected and Global catalog is selected by default.
Click Next. The wizard prompts you to create a delegation to the DNS server.
Click Yes
The Location for Database, Log Files, and SYSVOL screen appears. Select folders for the domain
controller database
13
How to remove server roles?
1. Go to server manager.
2. Click on roles and in the right side of the pane you can see the add roles button and
remove roles button.
3. Select on the check box you want to remove example I want to remove DHCP server
tick and uncheck the check box.
4. Once the confirmation screen is display click remove button.
