AUDIO SCRIPTS LISTENING PAPER PART 1

1.1
I love what I do and I am very proud of the uniform I wear. I drive around for most of
the day but I’m always somewhere in the city centre. My job is controlling the traffic.
When I hear there’s a traffic problem I go and see what I can do about it. I just use
my hands and my voice – no equipment’s necessary – except for my car, of course. I
couldn’t work without that!

1.2
I never did well at school. I was only interested in drawing – I was quite good at that.
And that’s what I do now – drawing. I work in an advertising agency and I do the
artwork for advertisements. But I don’t use a pencil or paint – it’s all done on a
computer – that’s the only piece of equipment I need. I like being comfortable when I
work, so I wear jeans. I don’t even own a suit.

1.3
This is my first job and I’ve only been here for a year. My microscope is my most
important piece of equipment. I couldn’t do my work here in the zoo without it. I love
animals but I don’t often get to see the ones here! My job is testing. I test all kinds of
things – the animals’ food, the water they drink, and if they get ill, I test their blood.
It’s very important that everything here is clean, so I have to wear a white coat over
my clothes, and I’m always washing my hands!

1.4
Actually, I want to change what I do. I work in a bank, and it’s a good job, but I’d
like to do something more exciting. Here it’s the same thing every day. My job is
helping customers. I help customers when they come into the bank and I help them
when they phone up. I don’t really have any equipment apart from the phone. I spend
a lot of time on the phone. I have to wear a suit at work, which I hate – I’d much
prefer to wear jeans!

1.5 Practice Test 1

Part 1
There are seven questions in this part. For each question there are three pictures and a
short recording. Choose the correct picture and put a tick in the box below it. Before
we start here’s an example:
0. How will they get to the station?
2

M: The film starts at 8, so we can get the train at about 7.30.

F: There are no trains between 7 and 8. We’ll have to get the 7.20 bus from the
station. My dad will bring us home in the car afterwards. There are no
buses that late.

The first picture is correct. So there is a tick in box A. Look at three pictures for
question 1 now. Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear each
recording twice.

1. What time will the meeting start?

M: Are you going to the meeting about the school trip this afternoon?
F: Yeah. Half-past two, isn’t it?
M: Didn’t they tell you? We have to start half an hour earlier because the
headmaster has to leave by three-thirty.
F: OK, So, two o’clock then. At least that means it won’t last longer than an hour
and a half. I hate long meetings. See you there.

2. What would Tina prefer to do this afternoon?

M: Shall we go for a walk by the river this afternoon? Or would you like to see an
art exhibition we read about in the paper? Or maybe you’d prefer to go
shopping?
F: How long is the exhibition on for?
M: Until next month.
F: Well, in that case, I’d rather go to the river. I don’t feel like shopping and
the weather’s too nice to stay inside. We can see the exhibition another time.

3. Where is the man’s phone?

M: I can’t find my phone. I hope I haven’t left it in the café.
F: Oh, you lent it to me to send a message to Anna, remember? I think I put it in my
bag.
M: Or in your coat pocket. You were wearing your grey coat.
F: Let me see. Yes, you’re right. Here it is. Strange, I was sure I’d put it in my bag.
Still, at least we don’t have to go back to the café.

4. What is the weather going to be like tomorrow?

F: Oh, I wish it would stop raining!
M: Me too. The forecast says it’s going to be sunny at the weekend, but the next
two days are going to be much the same as today, only not so windy.

5. What did Mike buy for his sister?

F: Hi Mike. Did you get a present for your sister?
M: Yes, I went to that shop you told me about to look for a hat and scarf. There was
a great selection of hats, but I just didn’t know which one she’d like. It was
easier to choose a scarf and the assistant showed me some matching gloves, so
I got those instead of a hat.

6. Where is Susy’s house?

M: Hi Susy. I’ve just got off the bus outside the cinema. How do I get to your
house from here?
F: Can you see the crossroads?
M: Yeah.
F: Well, go straight on at the crossroads, then take the first on the left. Our house is
on the right opposite the bakery.

7. Which one is Milly?

F: Which one’s your sister?
M: Milly? You see that tall blond F near the door? Well Milly’s the one standing
in front of her.
F: Long brown hair? Blue dress?
M: That’s her. Are you surprised?
F: Yes, I am. I thought she’d be tall, like you.
