Psy 18 Reflection
Psy 18 Reflection
The reason why I chose this quote because it is relevant to me, and I have learned that our
thoughts, feelings, and actions are important tenets to change society. I have learned that our
society is determined by how humans think for themselves and others; how humans show
empathy and sympathy for those who are least, last, and the lost, and; how human actions
affect the course of history. An existential point of view suggests that humans are the ones who
build their destiny and create meaning to meaningless things here on Earth. In my perspective,
life is indeed meaningless. We humans are the ones who give meaning to each object we see
and making up interpretations based on our understanding and experiences. Henceforth, all
ideologies and beliefs are mental tools we use to guide us on how to keep us sane in this
irrational world, but we see to it that they are aligned in reality and to our made-up subjective
moral standards. I do believe that the more we know ourselves, the more we make and find
things that give us our life more meaningful than ever before. The more we realize that life is
truly empty as it may be, the more we search for opportunities and knowledge to fill the gap and
void inside us. It is the gap and void that made man anxious and insecure about himself and
others. An absurd man like us will continue and is determined to improve himself; an absurd
man will keep on searching for facts and truths that could change his life; an absurd man is not
loyal to one dogma, but rather he is faithful to himself and his welfare--thus, he is willing to
adopt change at the expense of his ego, and; an absurd man is not afraid to new ideas. I used
the word “absurd” because man has less comprehension of how the world works; hence, we
keep on studying concepts and discussing theories to explain the meaning behind the sacred of
life.
The way I understand this quote is that the way we see life is not the “life” the way we interpret
it--like how we deem it as truth, reality, and beautiful, but rather it is just a mere assumption
because keep striving to achieve the ego-ideal guided by our conscience along with the
experiences that we had. We are all subjects to life; thus, life has had meaning since the time
we had a conscious confrontation with life. Life wouldn’t exist, or it could be meaningless from
time to time if a man wasn’t aware of his purpose and his devotion to making his life indeed
more meaningful. Then again, man is free to make his grandiose design of life, if; and only if, he
will use it to know the metaphysical and epistemological aspect of life in the absurd world.
I realized that we need to take control of the life we are given. Friedrich Nietzsche told us that
traditions and old school of thoughts, including religion, will soon, thereafter, fall and diminish for
we humans are advanced and curious. To evade the possibility of becoming a Nihilist, we must
invest in hobbies, talents, and interests that have something to do with us--we must walk past
the traditions that inhibited us and limit our freedom to do the things that we want. Indeed, we
must make our own morals and avoid the herd mentality. Voltaire reminded us that we must
avoid the teachings of the herd for it bears absurdity which is responsible for the unwanted
atrocities committed by mankind throughout history.
