HAMLET’s 1ST SOLILOQUY (act 1, scene 2)
First soliloquy occurs after the death of Hamlet’s father. Hamlet was so
disheartened because of his father’s death and his mother’s second marriage by
his uncle Claudius. He said I wish that I could commits suicide and leave this world
but I cannot do this because this is a sin and forbidden by God, so self massacre is
not an option. He shows disillusionment to the world that this world is very selfish
and mean. He compares his world to the “unweeded garden” that good people
are gone like his father and the beast rules like his uncle King Claudius. He was so
angry on his mother that it has been less than two months of his father’s death,
and his mother get married to his uncle. Hamlet shows his so much affection with
his father and compare him with “Hyperion” (one of mythological Titan, who was
a hero, a god of light of wisdom) and compares Claudius to a satyr (a monster). He
says that his father was so loving to his mother that he could stop the wind
blowing against her face. Hamlet mourns that a beast would mourn a little longer
for their loved ones but her mother changes totally. After his father’s death the
biggest reason of sorrow was his mother’s disloyality to his father that after a
month she got married to nobody else but married to her husband’s brother.
Hamlet calls his mother a frailty women that she is so weak from inside and
outside as she deceive his father and his father’s love and forget him within some
days. Hamlet states that his uncle can’t e like his father. He also compares his
father to Hercules; who was such a great hero. He was so dishearten and says her
mother’s and uncle’s relation an incestuous relation which he cannot accept ever.
But in the last lines he was so disappointed and says I cannot say anything to
anyone, whatever is in my heart I have to bear it because he knows he cannot
protest openly weather his heart breaks.
HAMLET’s 2ND SOLILOQUY (act 1, scene 5)
The second soliloquy begins after the ghost appears of death king and tells him
about his father’s death. It was Hamlet’s father ghost who charges a duty to
hamlet to take revenge of his death. That ghost tells him that it was a murder
when I was sleeping somebody pours poison in my ear. The ghost exposes a real
murderer who wears crown that means King Claudius. Hamlet was shocked by
disclosure of his uncle. The ghost echoes makes his remember about his father’s
murder and ask him to take revenge. Hamlet was afraid, his legs were shivering,
he says to his heart to be strong and forget all foolish problems and unnecessary
things of his life and just remember the commandment of ghost. He says his
mother a malicious women and hates his uncle who gives fake smile ever. Hamlet
promised himself to punish his father’s murderer. This soliloquy holds enormous
importance and one of the crucial supports of act 1.
This is the most famous soliloquy of Hamlet play. This soliloquy starts with the
question which Hamlet asks himself that “to be or not to be” mean to live or not
to live. Here he was so confused about his life that either he should live or just
die. This is speech is about contemplating suicide. He thinks about the problems
and says should I fight against them or just leave and there is a big change. He
says death is a solution of every problem as when I sleep all the problems fade
away, death ends my suffering. Then he says death is like a sleep when we sleep,
we saw dreams and nobody knows what dream would come, it could be a night
mare and we cannot control our dreams. As we do not know what happens after
death so he stops here and hesitate to commit suicide. We can see renaissance
influence of modern time as he says death was undiscovered territory, unknown
place we would go and never return back because of this fear everyone bears life
suffering, hurdles, snag and impediments to live but most of the people commit
suicide because they are not strong enough to bear life’s consequences and that
make us coward. In the end hamlet says, these thoughts that what happens after
death bring us back to our life and makes us ale to solve our problems and make
new resolutions and then he stops thinking of committing suicide. This whole
soliloquy is challenging medieval concept because suicide is a sin when we see it
religiously but here Hamlet contemplate suicide which is modern thing.
Hamlet’s fifth soliloquy starts when hamlet comes to meet his mother Gertrude in
his room for a while. here he use “witching night” that means it was a dark or mid
night when he was going through her mother Gertrude. Hamlet selects night time
because at the darkest night he can murder anyone and nobody could see that.
He say I will not kill my mother but by my works I will wrench her soul, by my
words I could hurt her. Then he also says that I my heart is pure from my mother
side but If I get angry on her then I will kill her. He says “let me be cruel not
unnatural” which shows he wants to show his angriness to his mother and he
should not be so kind to her. In the end he says he just can say all the things but
do none because she was her mother and hamlet was such a coward person.
This soliloquy begins when Hamlet decided to kill his uncle Claudius by his naked
sword and go behind him to send him in hell for his sins. When he saw that his
father’s murderer; King Claudius is in a state of praying so the thinks that he
should not murder him right now right here because it’s a holly place. If I kill him
here so he will directly go to heaven and that he does not want. Because if
Claudius send to heaven that will b unfair to his dead father because he is also
there and if he sees his murderer in heaven that will hurts him. Hamlet decides he
will kill his so called uncle Claudius when he was asleep, drunk, in an incestuous
pleasure of his bed, gaming or doing some wrong things. In this way when
Claudius will be killed he will have to pay for his sin which he did by killing
Hamlet’s innocent father.
When the information was given to Hamlet by the captain wakes up Hamlet to
take revenge and makes him angry on himself for his cowardness and inaction. He
realizes that there are thousands of soldiers who sacrifice their lives for a piece of
land and never give up. But he; Hamlet who play an excellent drama for knowing
a real murderer and take revenge but still unable to do any action against that
murderer Claudius. This soliloquy shows that hamlet has natural scarcity that
always stops his purpose. He is a man of thinking who always think but do not do
action. He tells himself that everyone has a goal which they have to achieve.
There is reason behind living a life which everyone has to fulfill. If anyone who is
not doing anything just eat and sleep so he is not man, he is an animal. Who has
no goals because god gave reason to live. He says that we all find “quarrel in
straw” means we all have to accept the challenges of our lives, even if the
aggravation is far and harder. Hamlet remembers his powerful motive or desire of
his death father and incestuous mother. These thinkings torture him but this here
is a turning point when he realizes that his motive is to take revenge of his
father’s death and give punish to the murderer and stop thinking and crying over
a spilt mills.
