How to Upgrade Code On a Hitachi NAS Local SMU

**This article is only visible to Service Partners and Employees**

Objective
This procedure will guide the Field Engineer though a code upgrade of an Hitachi NAS Local External SMU.

• The SMU should always be upgraded to the latest GA release of SMU Code

Environment
• Hitachi NAS Gateway Platform
◦ Hitachi Hardware SMU 400
◦ Hitachi Virtual SMU (vSMU)

Procedure

SMU UPGRADE PATH


Latest GA

PREP WORK

Open a browser session to the SMU


1. Connect to the SMU by entering an ip address in the URL bar
a. Primary SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.1
b. Standby SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.254
c. Internal SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.2
d. Customer Management Network: <SMU customer ip address>
2. Login as Username: admin Password: nasadmin or <customer provided password>

Backup the External SMU configuration
1. Backup the SMU Configuration
a. Navigate to Home > SMU Administration > SMU Backup and Restore
i. Click the Backup SMU: <Backup> button
ii. Save the configuration file to a location on your computer
b. Repeat the above steps until you have two backup files of the same size.
c. Verify that the archive file opens
2. If upgrading a vSMU take a Snapshot of the VMware Instance

Backup the Internal SMU configuration


1. Backup the Server Registry (Internal SMU settings will be included)
a. Navigate to Home > Server Settings > Configuration Backup & Restore
i. Click the <Backup> button
ii. Save the registry file to a location on your computer
b. Verify that the archive file opens

Things to Check
1. Verify/Check version of HCS and if it will support the Target SMU and HNAS version (see HCS/HCmD release
notes)

Collect Diagnostics from the system


1. Navigate to Home > Status & Monitoring > Download Diagnostics
a. In the Managed Server section, select "Include Only the Currently Managed Server"
b. Leave the Storage and FC Switches checkboxes selected
c. In the SMU section, uncheck "Include archived diagnostics"
d. Click download
2. Save to a location on your computer

Stop ALL Replications (Normally performed by the customer)


1. Stop all File Replication Jobs
a. Navigate to Home > Data Protection > File Replication
i. In the Schedules Section
ii. Abort any running replication jobs
iii. Set any jobs that are scheduled to run during the upgrade period to INACTIVE in the details page
2. Stop all Object Replication Jobs
a. Navigate to Home > Data Protection > Object Replication

i. In the Schedules Section

SMU UPGRADE

Install the SMU code via SMU GUI


1. Navigate to Home > SMU Administration > SMU Upgrade
a. Browse to the location of SMUsetup .iso file (SMUsetup_<version>_hds.iso)
b. Click <Apply>
c. Click <OK> to confirm
d. IMPORTANT! - Do not interrupt the process; doing so might corrupt the PostgreSQL database and the only
recovery will be a clean serial or clean kvm rebuild of the SMU.
2. The SMU will automatically reboot.

Re-Open the browser session to the SMU


1. Connect to the SMU by entering an ip address in the URL bar
a. Primary SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.1
b. Standby SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.254
c. Internal SMU - Private Management Network: 192.0.2.2
d. Customer Management Network: <SMU customer ip address>
2. Login as Username: admin Password: nasadmin or <customer provided password>

Verify the SMU Version


1. Navigate to the GUI Home screen
a. Verify the SMU version by clicking “About” at the top right hand of the SMU GUI screen
2. Click Back to return to the home screen

vSMU MANAGING A GEfN Cluster


1. If this is a vSMU managing a GEfN cluster then perform the following procedure
a. Login as Username: admin Password: nasadmin or <customer provided password>
b. Type q to exit to CentOS
c. Type su - to promote user to root
d. Type the following commands
/bin/cp /home/manager/conf/sudoers.save /etc/sudoers
/bin/cp /home/manager/conf/iptables /etc/sysconfig/iptables

e. Type Hstatus to confirm that HDRS can communicate

END OF UPGRADE PROCEDURES

After the successful completion of the upgrade


1. Check that the customer has access to the Primary and/or Standby SMU

Primary SMU - Restart ALL Replications (Normally performed by the customer)


1. Restart all File Replication Jobs
a. Navigate to Home > Data Protection > File Replication
i. In the Schedules Section
ii. Restart File Replication schedules
iii. Verify that File Replication jobs start successfully
2. Restart all Object Replication Jobs
a. Navigate to Home > Data Protection > Object Replication
i. In the Schedules Section
ii. Restart Object Replication schedules
iii. Verify that the Object Replication jobs start successfully

Collect Diagnostics from the system


1. Navigate to Home > Status & Monitoring > Download Diagnostics

External Program Checks


1. Remote Ops (Hi-Track) Monitor Upgrade: It is highly recommended for SMU 12.6 and later that Remote Ops (Hi-
Track) Monitor be upgraded to the latest GA release of HTM.
2. Check that the HNAS System is configured and reporting in Remote Ops (Hi-Track) Monitor.
3. Hitachi Command Suite (HCS)
a. Go to SMU (Home > Storage Management > Hitachi Device Managers), highlight the listed entries and press
the "sync now" button
b. Go to HCS (Resources > File Servers > All File Servers) and verify the "Last Refreshed" column reflects the

recent time update
c. If using HCmD - verify Administration > Host Collectors > Host lists the SMU/HNAS in question with a "Last
Operation" status = GREEN at a recent time update. If not, select the host and perform a Refresh

Final Step
1. Upload the Pre and Post Upgrade Diagnostics and puTTy logs to the SR opened for the upgrade
