There are twelve zodiac signs and 27 stars in ast rology. The st ar t hat dominat es when we are
born is called t he zodiac star. It is said in horoscope myt hology t hat our st ar is also relat ed t o
life. There is an angel for every st ar. The belief is t hat worshiping t hem will bring good luck and
prosperit y in life.

The word Nakshatra means “t hat which does not decay” t hey are t he union of lunar mansions,
t hrough which t he moon passes in t he orbit around t he eart h and is divided int o 27 segment s of
t he fixed st ar.

The moon revolves around t he eart h in roughly 27 days. During t his period, t he moon t races a
pat h around t he sky. The ancient myst ics split t his pat h of t he moon int o 27 unit s and gave each
unit t he name of a nakshat ra, nakshat ras group, or const ellat ion.

The 27 Nakshatra 

1. Aswini (Horse’s Head)


Deity: Asvini-Kumara “Twin gods of healt h”
Ashwini is t he first nakshat ra among t he 27 nakshat ras present in Vedic Ast rology. Ashwini is
governed by t he dualit y idols known as Ashwini Kumar Twins, who are t he physicians of god.
Therefore, t his nakshat ra has great healing power. Ashwini is classified as a small const ellat ion,
which means t hat it is believed t o be beneficial t o begin works of a small or a delicat e nat ure
while t he moon is in Ashwini.

2. Bharani (Yoni, the female organ of reproduction)


Deity: Yama – god of deat h

Bharani is t he second nakshat ra of Vedic Ast rology, t he name Bharani comes from t he word
bharaṇa, which means, “t o maint ain, bear”. This nakshat ra remains under t he domain of Yama, who
is t he Hindu god of deat h.

3. Krittika (Knife or spear)


Deity: Agni, t he god of fire

The Mrigasira Nakshatra is t he 5t h Nakshat ra of t he Vedic Ast rology and is also considered t o
be t he same as t he const ellat ion ‘Orion’. This is a very prominent const ellat ion t hat is visible
from all t he part s of t he world and is one of t he most conspicuous st ar format ions in t he night
sky.

Ardra Nakshatra is t he 6t h nakshat ra in t he Vedic Ast rology and is considered t o be t he


goddess of fort une. The st ar format ion of t his nakshat ra corresponds t o t he Bet elgeuse st ar. It
is one of t he bright est st ars in t he night sky and appears as a giant big red st ar.
7. Punarvasu (Bow and quiver)

Punarvasu Nakshatra is t he 7t h nakshat ra in Vedic Ast rology. This nakshat ra is also t he birt h
st ar of Lord Rama, t he popular Hindu god who is believed t o be t he reincarnat ion of Lord Vishnu.
The presiding deit y of t his Nakshat ra is Adit i and it is under t he influence of planet Jupit er.

8. Pushya (Cow’s udder, lotus, arrow, and circle)


Deity: Brihaspat i, priest of t he gods

Pushya Nakshatra is t he 8t h nakshat ra in Vedic Ast rology whose name has been derived from
t he Sanskrit word ‘pusht i’ t hat means nourishment . In t he const ellat ion, it appears as a collect ion

9. Ashlesha (Serpent)

Ashlesha Nakshatra is t he 9t h Nakshat ra of Vedic Ast rology and is believed t o embody t he


energy of Mercury and t he st rengt h of serpent God Naga. It is also known as Naga and Clinging
St ar.
10. Magha (Royal throne)
Deity: Pit rs, ‘The fat hers’, family ancest ors

Magha nakshatra is t he 10t h nakshat ra of t he Vedic Ast rology which corresponds t o t he st ar


Regulus. The word ‘magha’ means royal or grand and just as it s name suggest s t he nat ives of t his
nakshat ra get royal and respect able posit ions in t heir lives.

11. Purva Phalguni (Front legs of bed, hammock, fig tree)


Deity: Aryaman, t he God of cont ract s and unions

Purva Phalguni Nakshatra is t he 11t h nakshat ra of t he Vedic Ast rology. On one hand, t his st ar
symbolizes joy and creat ion and on t he ot her, it symbolizes a lack of desire and insipidit y, hence
it is a mixt ure of bot h posit ive and negat ive.
