DE Mock Test 1

1. The document contains 11 problems related to differential equations, calculus, and physics. It provides some hints and comments for selected problems. 2. Problems involve determining salt concentration in a tank over time, classifying equations, radioactive dating, general solutions to differential equations, motion with resistance, orthogonal trajectories, differential equations of families of curves, and thermometer readings. 3. Hints include using the relationship between salt input/output, using Bernoulli's method or an integrating factor, and looking for searchable problems online if stuck. Answers are also provided but may be incorrect.

You are on page 1/ 2

You have 2 hours!!! GO YOU!

1. A tank contains 100 gallons of brine. Three gallons of brine, each containing 2 pounds of
dissolved salt, enter the tank each minute, and the mixture, assumed uniform, leaves at the
rate of 2 gallons per minute. The salt concentration in the tank is 1.6 pounds per gallon at
the end of 1 hour. What was the initial concentration of salt in the tank.

2. State whether the equation is ordinary or partial, linear or nonlinear, and give its order
and degree.
2 2
a. x ddt2y ≠ y ddt2x = c1
b. ada + bdb = 0

3. Carbon extracted from an ancient skull recently unearthed contained only one-sixth
as much as radioactive C as carbon extracted form the present day bone. How old is the
skull? (Note: The disintegration of radioactive C follows the exponential law of decay and
its halflife is 5,730 years.)

4. Find the general solution of 2ydx + (x3 lny ≠ x)dy = 0

5. A body falls against a resistance that is proportional to the speed at any instant. If
the limiting speed is 18.4 meters per second and the body attains half that speed in 1 sec-
ond, find the initial speed of the body.

6. Find the orthogonal trajectories of x2 + y 2 ≠ 2Cx = 0

7. Find the differential equation of the family of curves defined by the equation y =
C1 x2 + C2 x

8. Solve y 2 dx + x2 dy = xy(dy ≠ dx)

9. At 1:00 PM, a thermometer reading 70¶ F is taken outside where the temperature is
-10¶ F. At 1:02 PM, the reading is 26¶ F. At 1:05 PM, the thermometer is taken back indoors,
where the air temperature is 70¶ F. What is the thermometer reading at 1:09 PM?

10. Verify that y = 3e≠2x + 4ex is a solution of y ÕÕÕ ≠ 3y Õ + 2y = 0

11. Find the particular solution of y(y 2 ≠ 2x)dx + x(x + y 2 )dy = 0 that satsifies the condition
y = 1 when x = 2.
Hints and Random Comments. (char add ka ng stuffzz sa mga blank numbers wahaha)
1. RE is 6lbs/min. The salt concentration is Q/V.
2a.
2b.
3.
4. You can use Bernoulli in x
5.
2
6. ln( yx + x) = C is a correct but not-simplified version of the “right” answer
7.
8. You can use homogeneity
9. Solve it “normally” with TM = ≠10¶ F until you get T at 1:05PM. Then make another
equation with TM = 70¶ F . Use the same k but compute for a new C. Find T at t = 4. This
question is searchable hihi so ask google if you’re having trouble! :)
10. Symbolab to the rescue if you’re lazy like me!! - Sham
11. You can use integrating factor

3. 14,5811.835 years
4. y = x2 ylny ≠ x2 y + Cx2 or equivalent
5. I got 2.729 m/s using R = kv and mg ≠ R = 0... but i’m not sure of my initial equations...
