A. Watch the hospital scene of 2003 movie titled “Lost in Translation” at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=LDC3Lhq0LBA&list=PLYXBBu_0XmglIiGkCb9fcGEj5JVFwcirM&index=44. In this part of the movie,
Charlotte has hurt her toe, and it is now bruised so badly that Bob insists that she must visit a local
hospital to have it checked. After watching, answer the questions that follow.

1. What type of communication difficulties do Charlotte and Bob experience in the hospital (at the front
desk and in the waiting room)?
They experienced Language Barrier wherein they did not understand what the front desk officer was
telling them. They just smile and nod their heads and rely on gestures of the officer to know where they
should go.

2. What do you think the Japanese woman was asking Bob?


Based on what I understand, the woman was asking about what Bob’s doing here in Japan.

3. What specific strategies were used to bridge their language and culture gaps?
At the first part, they used the gestures wherein the officer pointed where they should go and second
when the old lady asked him, he processed the words that the old lady was talking about and still relied
on his American culture by talking to her in English and copying her to maintain the conversation.

4. What does this movie tell you about intercultural communication? Explain your answer briefly but
substantially.
The movie tells us about intercultural communication that we should know the culture of other countries
and how to adapt from it so that we can avoid misunderstandings and continue to globally interact. it is
based on us if we forget our very own culture and choose the culture we are adapting with or we can have
our very own culture as well as the culture we have now.

Groups of Emotionally Expressive because they can communicate without hesitation, can express their
