IN MATHEMATICS 4

I. Objectives

At the end of the discussion the students shall be able to do the following with at least
80% proficiency:

a. Compare fractions using an illustrations;


b. Differentiate the fractions with the same denominator and;
c. Apply the concept of comparing fractions in solving word problems.

Good Morning, class!


How are you today?
That’s good to hear!
What was our topic yesterday?
Correct. It was all about Fraction.
We have three types of fraction. What are those?
Very Good. Proper Fraction, Improper Fraction and Mixed Number.
4. Motivation

Now, I have here sets of pictures and I want you to examine them carefully. If you
think that the first picture is greater or bigger than the second picture, you will clap
your hands. On the other hand, if you think that the second picture is bigger or greater
than the first picture, you will shake your hands. Are you ready?

B. Lesson Proper

Today, we are going to use our comparing skills in comparing fractions. But
remember we can only compare fractions if we are referring to the same thing. Now in
your notebooks, I want you to draw a rectangle. Then, show ¼ using that rectangle.
Done? It should look like this.

Then, draw another rectangle which has the same size with your first rectangle. Show me
¾ using that rectangle.

Now let us compare these two fractions.

Which is bigger?

Fractions are numbers even though they show a part of a whole. Just like with the whole
numbers ( 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ..).

The symbols we use to show bigger, smaller, and equal to are displayed in the chart.

Equivalent (equal to) =


Same Denominator

When fractions have the same denominator we can compare them by looking at
the value of the denominator.

Example:

2/5 ________ 4/5

Both fractions have the same denominator of 5. The size of fraction can be
determined by the value of numerators. In this example, we would compare 2 and 4. Two
is larger than four, so we can state that two fifth is less than (<) four fifths.

C. Comparison and Abstraction

Now what can you observe on the fractions that we have compared?
What can you say about their denominators?
What does the numerator tells us in comparing fractions with the same denominator.

D. Generalization

How are we going to compare fractions with the same denominator?

E. Application

Let us answer the following questions.

1. Which is longer, a stick that is 7/11m long or a stick that is 5/11m long?
2. Ziyan ate 2/8 of the cake, while Azeeziya ate 3/8 of the cake. Who ate less?

V. Evaluation

VI. Assignment

Answer the following problem.

Anieqa needs the longest lace for her project. She has red, pink, and blue laces. The red
Lace is 7/12m long. The pink is 11/12m long and the blue lace is 12/12m long. Which is lace
should she use? Why?

Farhanah ate 3/9 of the cake while Fairah ate 2/9 of the cake. Who ate bigger? Why?
