QUESTIONS ON “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”

As you read the book, think about and answer the following questions. Send the
answers to your teacher by March 7. You can use [email protected] OR
[email protected] We will also discuss these questions briefly in class on
March 8.

CHAPTER 1

1. What details are given to show that the Dursleys are “normal” people?
The beginning of the story says that the Dursleys are proud of their
perfect normal.
2. What strange things did Mr. Dursley see on his way to work and during
the day?
He saw a cat reading a map on the corner of street.
3. What is Bonfire Night? On what day does this British holiday fall?
Bonfire Night was held at November 5th, but in the story the people
celebrated Bonfire Night a week earlier.
4. How does Mrs. Dursley feel about her sister? What words or phrases
does she or the author use to show these feelings?
Mrs. Dursley hated her sister, even pretended she didn’t have a sister at
all. The author use the word ‘‘unDursleyish’’ to describe her sister.
5. What unusual things do the Muggles notice that day and evening?
Owls was flying by daylight, a downpour of shooting stars all over
Britain, and there are many mysterious people in cloaks all over the
street.
6. Dumbledore supposes Dedalus Diggle was responsible for the shooting
stars the Muggles saw because “he never had much sense.” Who was
Dedalus in mythology?
Daedalus was a craftsman and artist in Greek mythology
7. What details show that Dumbledore is a little silly?
He would trust Hagrid with his life, although Hagrid is truly careless.

CHAPTER 2

1. What details show that the Dursleys treat Harry badly?


The last sentence at the first paragraph ‘‘The room held no sign at all that
another boy lived in the house, too.’’
2. Compare the way they treat Harry with the way they treat Dudley?
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley treat their son like a prince, he have nearly forty
birthday gifts, they satisfy whatever he want. In contrast, Harry only
could live in a dark cupboard, all he had to wear were old clothes of
Dudley’s.
3. What strange things have happened to Harry that he didn’t understand?
His hair turned back so quickly after his Aunt had sheared it off.
4. How does the Dursleys react when Harry tells them about his dream?
Mr. Dursley shouted at Harry: ”MOTORBIKES DON’T FLY!”
Dudley and Piers sniggered.
5. What happens at the zoo?
Harry told to a snake. When Dudley and Piers noticed that and came to
Harry, the glass front of the boa constrictor’s tank had vanished. The bao
slithered out to the floor.
6. How is Harry punished afterwards?
He was asked to stay at cupboard, and didn’t have meal.

CHAPTER 3

1. Where was Dudley going to go to school? How were he and his parents
preparing?
He had a place at Uncle Vernon’s old school, Smeltings. Aunt Petunia
took Dudley to London to buy his Smeltings uniform.
2. Where was Harry going to be sent to school? How were the Dursleys
preparing?
Harry was going to Stonewall High, the local comprehensive. Aunt
Petunia was dyeing some of Dudley’s old things grey for Harry as his
uniform.
3. How do the Dursleys react to the first letter from Hogwarts? How does
Harry react? How does Dudley react?
The Dursleys became crazy and overly suspicious. Harry was surprised
that someone had written to him and nearly read it before Dudley noticed
that he had a letter and exposed it.
4. After all the letters arrive, what do the Dursleys decide to do?
The Dursleys decided to leave their house and drive away.
5. Describe the place where the Dursleys finally end up staying.
They finally ended up staying on a broken-down house on a rock which
was on the sea.
When Harry is lying on the floor, what is he waiting for?
He was waiting the time he turned 11.

CHAPTER 4

1. Describe Hagrid’s entrance. How do the Dursleys initially react?


BOOM, the whole shack was shivering, Hagrid knocked the door in a
rude way. Uncle Vernon hold a rifle and warned Hagrid, but the door just
be smashed by Hagrid.
2. How does Hagrid react to the fact that Harry does not know anything
about Hogwarts and his parents? How does Harry react?
First Hagrid was surprised, and then he went in fury and shouted at the
Dursleys because they didn’t told anything about magic world to Harry.
Harry was frustrated and suspicious whether he can be a wizard.
3. What things can be found in Hagrid’s coat?
A copper kettle, a squashy package of sausages, a poker, a teapot, several
chipped mugs and a bottle of some amber liquid. He also pulled a real,
live, rather ruffled-looking owl with a long quill and a roll of parchment.
4. What does Mrs. Dursley say about her sister?
She think her sister was a freak, and just didn’t understand that why both
her parent was proud of Lily.
5. What does Hagrid give Harry for his birthday?
He gave Harry a large, sticky chocolate cake with Happy Birthday Harry
written on it in green icing.
6. What things has Harry done without knowing how?
First, he was suspicious whether he can be a wizard, but when he came to
think about every odd things that had ever happened, he look back at
Hagrid with smile.
7. What does Hagrid do to Dudley?
Hagrid make a magic that there is a curly pig’s tail poking through a hole
in Dursley’s trousers.
8. Why won’t anyone say Voldemort’s name?
People was still scared in that time, he represented the dark days that
everyone didn’t want to recall.

CHAPTER 5

1. How do the people in the Leaky Cauldron react to Harry?


They felt so pound and pleased to meet Harry.
2. What kinds of things can you buy in Diagon Alley?
All kinds of daily supplies in Magic world, include the equipment
required by a new student of Hogwarts.
3. What kinds of money do wizards use?
The gold ones are Galleons, seventeen silver Sickles to a Galleons and
twenty-nine bronze Knuts to a Sickle.
4. What two places do Hagrid and Harry visit at Gringott’s?
They got a wild cart-ride, first, they went to the vault of Harry’s safe, and
second, they went to the top-security vault about the You-know-who.
5. Whom does Harry meet in Madame Malkin’s shop?
He met a young man who also was the freshmen of Hogwarts, but Harry
didn’t like him so far.
6. What other shops does Harry visit?
They went to Flourish and Blotts to buy Harry’s book and some
supplement like cauldron, and they got some apothecaries. After left
Eeylops Owl Emporium, Harry got a beautiful snowy owl. Last, they
went to Ollivanders to buy Harry’s wand.
7. What does school start at Hogwarts? Where does Harry spend the month
of August?
It was at September first, and Harry stayed with Dursleys on August.
