Assignment On Evaly: Is It A Digital Scam?

Evaly is an e-commerce site in Bangladesh that became very popular very quickly but also faced controversy. It operates using a business model of pre-ordering products at discounted prices before receiving them, which can lead to long delays. Customers complain about waiting 3-4 months for products and excuses about lack of stock. The document analyzes Evaly's model of bulk ordering from manufacturers at low prices, requiring large order volumes, which causes delays. While not technically a scam, the document argues Evaly needs better communication of its model to customers and more realistic delivery timelines to build trust.

Evaly: Is it a digital scam?
Evaly, an e-commerce marketplace which started in December 16 in the year 2018 by a bank
official MD. Rasel. It became the second largest e-commerce site in Bangladesh after Daraz
within a very short time. They already reached among most of the people of Bangladesh and
became well known but the activities created controversy even among the top front line news
portal. The critics mention that among all the e-commerce sites only evaly provide products
based on pre-order so the customer needs to pay the amount online before getting the product on
hand. Basically they attract customers by giving products less than market price and showing
huge discounts and offers but customer complains about their delay in delivering products on
time and many says that they make them wait for 3-4 months for a product and make excuse like
they don’t have in stock. Through analysis we found their business model which they usually
follow. They basically work as a mediator between manufacturer and the customers. They
forward the orders directly to the manufacturer in a bulk amount to get the product at a lower
price so they need to wait for huge orders to get that at reduced amount. Hence their delivery
time exceeds the probable one and people get dissatisfied with the order. They have another rule
which is if the customer cancels any order the paid amount gets into the e-wallet which means
they don’t get any amount in hand rather gets balance online which can only be used for
purchasing other products from the site only by 60% and the rest should be paid in cash. They
basically do business with customer’s money and when the money enters to their balance the
customers get trapped. They also take products from the vendor company at a huge loan so it is
seen that they are investing a lot of money which is not the truth.
Now if we see closely, they are trapping the hard earned money of people. They are taking lump
of orders without fulfilling the delivery on time and even their response is very vague which is
creating controversy and untrustworthiness among the customers. According to my opinion it is
not a digital scam because the concept is new in our country which is already in action abroad.
People are very new to this business model so their acceptance rate is minimum. They need to
first explain their business model to the customers and make them understand about the delay
and how it works and how they are able to provide such huge discounts by removing all the other
mediators and extra costs and also by creating efficient and effective management system as well
as reducing orders only which they can serve. They need to set an achievable and actionable goal
only then they can create trust and acceptance from the people.
