Element Types (Beam) in Ansys - Trivedigvn

The document discusses different beam element types in ANSYS. BEAM3 and BEAM4 are 2D and 3D elastic beam elements capable of tension, compression, bending, and torsion. BEAM23 is a 2D plastic beam element. BEAM24 is for thin-walled beams. BEAM44 and BEAM54 are tapered beam elements. BEAM188 and BEAM189 are the main 3D beam elements, based on Timoshenko beam theory, capable of linear and nonlinear analysis with 6-7 degrees of freedom.

Beam elements in ansys , it is important for a user to know the behavior of the element before defining (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definition) it

BEAM3 – 2-D Elastic Beam

BEAM3 is a uni-axial element with tension (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tension_%28physics%29), compression, and bending
(h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bending) capabilities. The element has three degrees of freedom
(h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degrees_of_freedom_%28physics_and_chemistry%29) at each node. You can use the element in an axi-symmetric
(h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetry) analysis if hoop effects are negligible, such as for bolts, slo ed cylinders, etc and must be create in XY
plane (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system).

BEAM4 – 3-D Elastic Beam

BEAM4 is a uni-axial element with tension, compression, torsion, and bending capabilities. The element has six degrees of freedom at each
node.Has large deflection .

BEAM23 – 2-D Plastic Beam

Element with tension-compression and bending capabilities. The element has plastic, creep, and swelling capabilities. If these effects are not needed,
BEAM3, the 2-D elastic beam, may be used.

BEAM24 – 3-D Thin-walled (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudostachyum) Beam

BEAM44
Tapered beam element .can use the beam tool to define a section and have real constants

BEAM54- 2-D Elastic Tapered Unsymmetric Beam

Element with tension, compression, torsion, and bending capabilities
It can be used with any cross section (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_section_%28geometry%29) that was defined using SECTYPE, SECDATA,
SECOFFSET, SECWRITE, and SECREAD. However, a section defined with these commands will be used only if there is no real constant set
defined.Shear deformation effects are included. For nonlinear materials, use BEAM188 or BEAM189

(h ps://trivedigvn.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/element.jpg)

It is very important Element in Beam types . Elements i defined above are up to Ansys (h p://www.ansys.com/) 11.0 version . As in updated Ansys
version they are being eliminated and only Beam 188 and Beam 189 are available so it is important to concentrate on their theory and behavior

BEAM188 -3-D Linear Finite Strain Beam

BEAM188 is a 2-node linear or quadratic beam element in 3-D
This element is based on Timoshenko beam theory (h p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timoshenko_beam_theory). Shear deformation effects are
included.

BEAM188 has six or seven degrees of freedom at each node, with the number of degrees of freedom depending on the value of KEYOPT(1).
When KEYOPT(1) = 0 (the default), six degrees of freedom occur at each node. .
When KEYOPT(1) = 1, a seventh degree of freedom (warping magnitude) is also considered.
This element is well-suited for linear, large rotation, and/or large strain nonlinear applications.
BEAM188 can be used with any beam cross-section defined via
Preprocessor>Sections>Beam>Common Sections

BEAM189 – 3-D Quadratic Finite Strain Beam

BEAM189 is a 3 node quadratic beam element in 3-D
Every thing is same as Beam 188
