General Description
A “boxer” engine has horizontally positioned cylinders rather than vertically positioned cylinders,
as seen in inline and V-type engines, with pistons that travel in opposing directions. The formal
engineering term for these engines is horizontally opposed, but they're known as "boxer"
engines because the horizontal movement of the pistons looks like a boxer's fists. This engine
has a lower center of gravity, which improves a vehicle’s handling. One drawback of boxer
engines is that access to some components for mechanics may be restricted.
Porsche, Subaru, and Toyota are the only manufacturers that provide "boxers" at the moment.
The Porsche 911 has always been powered by boxer engines, and the current lineup includes
many six-cylinder models (or flat-sixes). Four-cylinder boxers power the Porsche 718 Boxster,
718 Cayman, and 718 Spyder (flat-fours).
Whether a boxer engine has four or six cylinders, half of the pistons face one way and half the
other, and they move inward and outward simultaneously.
Advantages.
- Balance - The boxer engine has opposed pistons that are 180 degrees apart. The
forces on the crank are naturally balanced, and there are few vibrations.
- Center of gravity - Compared to other engines of the same power, the engine is
wide and long, but not particularly tall. This allows the weight of a car's engine to
be underneath, lowering the car's center of gravity.
Disadvantages.
- Cost - They have a bit more complexity to the parts.
- Leaks - The gaskets on the engine are subjected to stresses in more than a
single plane as the engine heats and cools. This causes problems with leaky
gaskets.
Conclusions
As presented during the paper, the boxer engine is an engine with a low center of gravity and
with a good balance, and for this reason, we can find them in several sports models such as the
Porsche 911 or the Subaru BRZ.has On the other hand, we can also mention some
disadvantages such as the high cost of manufacturing and maintenance and, according to the
sources cited, may also experience gaskets leaks.
