The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

In Britain, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is very popular with young people. Every year, teenagers in
Britain do charity work or travel on expeditions and win gold, silver or bronze awards. The Duke of
Edinburgh is the Queen of England’s husband, and until 2017 he sometimes presented the awards to
the winners. This year 276,000 young people are doing the Award.

There are different ways of winning an award. This year some young people are helping people in their
communities. Other young people are learning to play a musical instrument or they are doing a new
sport. And some young people are doing expeditions. They are learning how to build a fire or climb
mountains.

Winning a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is hard work but it is also fun. When they are doing the award,
teenagers learn about working with other people.
