Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• states, explains, and interprets Parenthesis,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS)
or Grouping, Multiplication, Division, Addition,
Subtraction

Introduction:
We can use the PMDAS or GMDAS rule in solving mathematical problems
involving more than one operations. This order of operation is step-by-step in solving
algebraic expression. For any expressions, all exponent should be simplified first
followed by multiplication and division from left to right and finally, perform addition
and subtraction as they occur from left to right.

What’s In (Communication)

Mastery of the basic operation is very important as part of our daily life. MDAS
(Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction) are the four (4) important fundamental
operations because these are the building blocks for higher – level math concept.
Let’s try. Answer the following question

4x3+2=N

2 3

16 ÷ 2 - 2 = N 12 x 3 + 2 = N

4 5

14 – 5 + 2 = N
4x3+8=N

What’s New (Communication and Character)

During the Enhanced Community Quarantine Period, Ella baked

550 mini cookies to be distributed to the frontliners. She packed 24

boxes with 15 cookies in each and 17 boxes with 10 cookies in each.

How many mini cookies does she still have?

What good trait was shown in the story?

If you were Ella will you do the same?

DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITY 2

Let’s try another examples

A. 6 x 3 + 4 = 18 + 4
= 22
B. 10 x 4 ÷ 5 + 6 – 4 = 40 ÷ 5 +6 – 4
= 8 + 6–4
= 14 – 4
= 10

C. (4 x3) + 3 x (2+ 4) = 12 + 3 x 6
= 12 + 18
= 30

Introduction:
In simplifying series of operations on a whole number more than
two operations, we follow the PMDAS rule. PMDAS and GMDAS rule
are very useful in solving mathematical problems involving more than one
operations. This order of operation is step-by-step in solving algebraic
expression.

What’s In
Find the missing operation

1.) (7 + 4) 7 = 18

2.) (22 - 3) 9 = 10

3.) (12 + 6) 4 = 14

What’s is It

4 x ₱50 1x ₱45
Here ‘s how to solve problem:
₱300- (4 x ₱50) + 45 Perform the operations inside the
parenthesis first (4x₱50= ₱200)
₱300 - 200 + 45 Then the groupings (₱200 + ₱45= ₱245)
₱300 – ₱245 = ₱55 Lastly do the subtraction process
₱300 - ₱245
Answer: Rey has still ₱55
