Network Interface Card A card in every device on a network that enables the device
to be identified by a MAC address.
Hub A box that links network nodes and sends data packets to all
the devices.
Data collision When two data packets go down one cable at once. Renders
the data unusable.
Switch Connects nodes like a hub but sends data packets only to
their intended destination.
N1. Find and add images for the following pieces of network hardware:
A network node NIC
Router WAP
2. Explain the different methods used by hubs and switches when transmitting data around the
network. In your answer, make reference to data security.
Hubs distribute received data packages to every connected device, even if it was not meant for
them. This isn’t very secure as anyone on the network can view the data. Switches send data
packages to the MAC address in the package. This is much more secure.
Data collisions can slow down a network because the data has to be resent.
When a data package arrives at the router, the router reads the data packet’s destination IP
address. The router uses a database to look up where that IP address is located. It then
determines all of the different paths or routes it can use to send the data packet through in
order to reach the IP address. It also checks how busy each path/route is at that very
moment and then sends the data packet via the fastest path.
5b. Identify two advantages of fibre optic cables compared to copper cables
5c. Identify one disadvantage of fibre optic cables compared to copper cables
The network can be accessed from anywhere within range of a WAP and devices don’t need to
be plugged in.
