Student Workbook: Network Hardware

Glossary
Network Interface Card A card in every device on a network that enables the device
to be identified by a MAC address.

Network protocol Set of rules used to convert data to a format compatible

with the network.

MAC address A unique address for every device on a network.

Hub A box that links network nodes and sends data packets to all
the devices.

Data packet A small chunk of data.

Data collision When two data packets go down one cable at once. Renders
the data unusable.

Switch Connects nodes like a hub but sends data packets only to
their intended destination.

Router A device which transfers data from one network to another.

IP address An identifying address used by routers. Different to a MAC

address.

Wired connection A connection with cables.

WAP A device that allows another device to connect to a wired

network without cables.

2. Explain the different methods used by hubs and switches when transmitting data around the
network. In your answer, make reference to data security.

Hubs distribute received data packages to every connected device, even if it was not meant for
them. This isn’t very secure as anyone on the network can view the data. Switches send data
packages to the MAC address in the package. This is much more secure.

3. What effect can data collisions have upon the network

Data collisions can slow down a network because the data has to be resent.

4. Complete the paragraph below by filling in the missing words

BUSY ROUTES PACKET

IP ADDRESS FASTEST DATABASE

When a data package arrives at the router, the router reads the data packet’s destination IP

address. The router uses a database to look up where that IP address is located. It then

determines all of the different paths or routes it can use to send the data packet through in

order to reach the IP address. It also checks how busy each path/route is at that very

moment and then sends the data packet via the fastest path.

5a. List two types of copper cables used in wired networks

Cat-5 and cat-6

5b. Identify two advantages of fibre optic cables compared to copper cables

Fibre optic cables transmit data faster than copper cables.

Fibre optic cables can transmit data over longer distance than copper cables.

5c. Identify one disadvantage of fibre optic cables compared to copper cables

Fibre optic cables are more expensive than copper cables.

6a. Identify two advantages of wired networks compared to wireless networks

Wired networks are faster than wireless networks.

Wired networks are less susceptible to interference.

6b. Identify an advantage of a wireless network compared to a wired network

The network can be accessed from anywhere within range of a WAP and devices don’t need to
be plugged in.
