TOM Microproject

This document is a project report submitted by Aditya S. Bet on collecting information about flywheels and governors. It discusses the basic concepts of flywheels and governors, including their types, applications, advantages and disadvantages. Flywheels store rotational energy and help reduce fluctuations in rotational speed. Governors are used to measure and regulate the speed of machines like engines. The report provides details on centrifugal governors and their use in controlling engine RPM.

(Project Guide)
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We wish to express our profound and sincere gratitude to our guide, who
guided us into the intricacies of this micro project non-chalantly with matchless
magnanimity. We are indebted to his constant encouragement, co-operation and
help. It was his enthusiastic support that helped us in overcoming the various
obstacles in this project.
We would also like to express our thankfulness to our beloved Principal,
H.O.D. and other faculty members of our Second Year Department for extending
their support and motivation.
Finally, we would be failing in our duty, if we don’t acknowledge the
cooperation rendered during various stages of this micro-project by our group
members.
Thank you.......!
FLYWHEEL:-
A flywheel is a mechanical device specifically designed to
efficiently store rotational energy.
Its resist changes in rotational speed by their moment of inertia.
The amount of energy stored in a flywheel is proportional to the
square of its rotational speed.
A flywheel is nothing but a heavy rotating disc attached to a shaft.
It rotates along with the shaft. Because of its large weight, it has
large amount of inertia, the property of a body by which it tends
to remain in motion unless some other force causes it to stop.
The way to change a flywheel’s stored energy is by increasing or
decreasing its rotational speed by applying a torque aligned with
its axis of symmetry.
APPLICATIONS:-
1. In internal combustion engine.
2. In wrist watches as a spring.
3. In punching presses.

TYPES OF FLYWHEELS:-
1. HIGH VELOCITY FLYWHEEL:-
The angular velocity of these type of Flywheels comes between
30000 rpm to 60000 rpm. They contain magnetic levitation
bearings and need less maintenance. They are lighter in weight
low velocity flywheels. They are costly in comparison to Low
velocity Flywheels.

2. LOW VELOCITY FLYWHEEL:-

The angular velocity of these type of Flywheels comes up to
10000 rpm. They are bulky and heavy if compared to high velocity
Fly wheels. They need periodic maintenance and does not use
magnetic levitation bearings. Their installation needs special
concrete construction to support its weight. They are cheaper in
comparison to high velocity Fly wheels.
ADVANTAGE:-
1) Less overall cost.
2) High energy storage capacity.
3) High power output.
4) They are safe, reliable, energy efficient, durable.
5) Low and inexpensive maintenance.
6) It is independent of working temperatures.
7) High energy density.

DISADVANTAGES:-
1) Complexity of durable and low loss bearings.
2) Mechanical stress and fatigue limits.
3) Material limits at around 700 M/Sec tip speed.
4) Potentially hazardous failure modes.
5) Short discharge time.
6) Current Flywheels have low specific energy.
GOVERNOR:-
A governor, or speed limiter or controller, is a device used to
measure and regulate the speed of a machine, such as an engine.
The function of governor is to regulate the mean speed of an
engine, when there are variations in the load e.g. when the load
on an engine increases, its speed decreases, therefore it becomes
necessary to increase the supply of working fluid.
CLASSIFICATION OF GOVERNOR

Application of Governor:-
1) Used in petrol and diesel engine.
2) Used in jet engine.
3) Marine engines.
4) Steam and gas turbines.
5) Hydraulic turbines.

Centrifugal Governor:-
A centrifugal governor is used to control the speed of rotating
machinery. One of the most common applications is in controlling
the RPM of an engine by regulating the fuel supply.

Conclusion:-
We are able to get the working, and mainly the field application of
the Flywheel and the Governor. We are able to understand the
basic concept of the Flywheel and the governor.
