SECTION –A
1. What does q1 + q2 = 0 signify in electrostatics?
2. On what factors does the capacitance of a capacitor depend?
3. An air capacitor is given a charge of 2μC raising its potential to 200V. If on inserting a dielectric medium, its
potential falls to 50V, what is the dielectric constant of the medium?
4. Give the expression for current in terms of drift velocity.
5. A (i) series (ii) parallel combination of two given resistors is connected one-by-one, across a cell. In which
case will the terminal potential difference, across the cell have a higher value?

For question numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 two statements are given-one labeled Assertion (A) and the other
labeled Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes (a), (b), (c) and (d) as
given below.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
b) Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A
c) A is true but R is false
d) A is false and R is also false

6. Assertion: A metallic shield in the form of a hollow shell may be built to block an electric field.
Reason: In a hollow spherical shield, the electric field inside it is zero at every point.
7. Assertion: Dielectric polarization means formation of positive and negative charges inside the dielectric
Reason: Free electrons are formed in this process.
8. Assertion: Though large number of free electrons are present in the metal. Yet there is no current in the
absence of electric field.
Reason: In the absence of electric field electrons move randomly in all directions.

9. Assertion: The value of temperature coefficient of resistance is positive for metals.
Reason: The value of temperature coefficient of resistance for insulator is also positive,

SECTION –B
Question10 is a Case Study based question.

Field and Potential due to Electric dipole

Electric field of an electric dipole at a point in space depends upon the position of the point.

The dipole field at a point is inversely proportional to the cube of distance from the center to the point.

An electric potential is the amount of work needed to move a unit positive charge from a reference point to a
specific point inside an electric field without producing acceleration. A dipole is a pair of opposite charges
with equal magnitudes separated by a distance, d.
The electric potential due to a point charge q at a distance of r from that charge is given by,
V = q/4πε0 r, Where ε0 is the permittivity of free space.
The electric potential is a scalar field whose gradient becomes the electrostatic vector field. Since it is a
scalar field, it is easy to find the potential due to a system of charges. It is the summation of the electric
potentials at a point due to individual charges.

(i) If E1 be the electric field strength of a short dipole at a point

on its axial line and E2 that on the equatorial line at the same
distance, then
(a) E1 = E2 (b) E1 = 2E2
(c) E2 = 2E1 (d) E1 = E2/2

(ii) Find the angle between electric field and equipotential surface?
(a) 90֠ always (b) 0֠ always (c) 0 to 90 degrees (d) 0 to 180 degrees

(a) 2.048 x105 N/C (b) 4.096 x105 N/C (c) 8.192 x105 N/C (d) 6.082 x105 N/C

(iv) The electric potential V at any point x, y, z (all the coordinates) are in metres in space is given by V= 4x2 volt.
The electric field at a point (1m,0,2m) in V/m is
(a) 8 along negative X - axis (b) 8 along positive X-axis
(b) 16 along negative X –axis (d) 16 along positive X axis.
