PHYSICS FOR ENGINEERS

ASSIGNMENT 1

• Define Physics.
Physics, science that deals with the structure of matter and the interactions between the
fundamental constituents of the observable universe. In the broadest sense, physics (from the
Greek physikos) is concerned with all aspects of nature on both the macroscopic and
submicroscopic levels.

• What is the importance of Physics in your course?

Engineering is basically physics applied to create something more practical. It can be
mechanical, electrical, civil, etc., but they’re all basically governed by physics. There’s no way
you would solve complex engineering problems without understanding the physics behind it.

In Civil Engineering, the laws of physics can tell you about forces, tension, harmonic vibrations
and oscillations, tensile strength, elasticity, and all kinds of other concepts that you can use to
make calculations about your designing and construction work .

• What is measurement?
Measurement is the act of determining a target's size, length, weight, capacity, or other
aspect. To show measured results using values and symbols.

• What are the uses of measurements in your course?

Accuracy can be one of the most important aspects to ensuring that a construction project
runs smoothly.

This is especially true when it comes to measurements, as an inexact figure can negatively affect
the entire process. Precise readings, therefore, could save huge amounts of time, labour and
money for people in the building trade.

Making accurate measurements is vital for ensuring that the construction of any infrastructure
is successful. What’s more, understanding the benefits of accurate measurements in this area
could help businesses improve and gain more outside attention as a result. The advantages to
measuring precisely show that it is not only necessary, but can also maximise company
spending and performance.

• What are the different types of measurements?

The three standard systems of measurements are the International System of Units (SI)
units, the British Imperial System, and the US Customary System. Of these, the International
System of Units(SI) units are prominently used.
• Name and define the different measurement system.

International System of Units (SI) units

The International System of Units (SI, abbreviated from the French Système international
(d'unités)) is the modern form of the metric system. It is the only system of measurement with an
official status in nearly every country in the world. The SI is intended to be an evolving system;
units and prefixes are created and unit definitions are modified through international agreement
as the technology of measurement progresses and the precision of measurements improves.

British Imperial System

The imperial system is a system of weights and measures that includes pounds, ounces, feet,
yards, miles, etc. We also call it imperial units, British imperial, or Exchequer Standards of 1928.
The imperial system today contrasts with the metric system, which uses kilograms, grams,
centimeters, meters, kilometers, etc.

US Customary System
Short for United States Customary System. The main system of weights and measures used in
the United States and a few other countries. The system is based on the yard as a unit of length,
the pound as a unit of weight, the gallon as a unit of liquid volume, and the bushel as a unit of
dry volume.
