1. Sports can be generally divided into indoor and outdoor sports. Indoors sports include e.g. gymnastics,
table tennis, boxing, wrestling. On the other hand, outdoor sports are cycling, mountain biking, skiing
(downhill, cross-country, slalom), , hiking, rock climbing, horse riding, golf and aquatic sports such as
rowing or windsurfing. Athletics is also typical outdoor sport. Athletics includes track and fields events
(the marathon, long-distance running, cross-country running) and sprinting events (the hundred meters
and hurdles). Jumping and throwing are also athletic sports.
Most sports and almost all games can be done both indoors and outdoors.
Other types of sports are summer and winter sports. Winter sports can be done only on ice or snow
e.g. skating or skiing, are winter sports. The rest we call summer or all-season sports.
Next, we know collective and individual sports. Collective sports should be based on “team spirit“
and coordination of many players, who are able to achieve huge success if they connect together and play as
one compact. Those are e.g. football, baseball, basketball, hockey, floorball or rugby.
Individual sport is a sport in which participants compete as individuals. For example - boxing,
cycling, running, golf or gymnastics. Popular are also martial arts- karate, taekwondo or aikido - , and
extreme sports such as sky diving, hang gliding, extreme motocross, freestyle skiing or skateboarding.
Extreme sports are associated with danger and adventure.
Other types of sports are professional and recreational sports. Professional sports are sports in which
athletes receive payment for their performance. Those are Baseball, American football, Ice hockey,
Basketball or professional cycling. Recreational sports are usually less stressful. Those are e.g non-
professional cycling, running, skiing.
2. Sports and games have always played an important role in my life. Since my childhood, I was keen on
such sports as swimming, cycling and badminton. I learned to swim when I was very young. Since then
swimming is my favourite sport. I also used to go skiing with my parents every winter. Later I became
interested in various ball games. Football, volleyball and basketball attracted me when I was older. In
my everyday life, though, I go cycling and I only sometimes do morning exercises. As for watching
sports, I love to go to see the matches of our ice-hockey team and besides there is always something on
TV like tennis or world championship in all kinds of sports and games.
3. Sports are one of the most popular leisure time activities. There are number of different reasons that
people have in common that explain why they play sport. They need to relax and they know that doing a
sport, suitable for them, can improve their health. Some sporting activities, such as aerobics, jogging,
swimming or bodybuilding are popular with those who want to lose weight. Many parents want their
child to do a sport. They believe that doing a sport is a good way for their children to spend their free
time and for developing their character. . During sports events one can meet a lot of new people and see
how it feels to be a winner or a loser.
4. The British are sport-loving people. Football, rugby, golf and tennis originated in Britain and spread all
over the world. The most popular game is football. The Cup Final is the most important football match
of the year in England. It is played at Wembley Stadium near London. Tennis is also very popular. It can
be played on a grass court or a hard court. The most famous tennis tournament is played in Wimbledon
every year. The championship is watched by thousands of spectators and TV viewers all over the world.
Slovaks are good at hockey. A lot of Slovak hockey players play in American and Canadian National
Hockey league teams.
Two of the most important sporting events are the Summer and Winter Olympic Games which are
held every four years in a different country. The Olympics first took place in ancient Greece. The Olympic
rings are a well-known symbol of OG. They represent the unity of the five continents. Only the best
sportsmen and women of each country are chosen to take part in the Olympic game.
