Tom Thumb was the smallest of seven brothers who worked in the woods. When they got lost, Tom used pebbles and breadcrumbs to mark a trail, but birds ate the crumbs. They found a house belonging to a giant who wanted to eat them. Tom tricked the giant into putting the brothers in a sack while thinking they were his daughters. Tom then stole the giant's magic seven-league boots, allowing them to escape and return home safely.

Tom Thumb

Once upon a time, there lived a family of woodcutters – a father, a mother and their seven
sons. The youngest was so tiny, the called him Tom Thumb. But even if he was small, he was the
cleverest of them all.
Each day, the children would go deep into the dangerous woods to gather berries and nuts to
eat. On one such day, Tom Thumb filled his pockets with pebbles.
“How silly,” said his brothers. “Come on, let’s go find some food.”After a while, the children
realized that they were lost. The could not find their way back home.
“No problem,” said Tom Thumb. “I’ve dropped white pebbles all along the way we came.
They’ll help us find our way home. Tom’s mother was so happy to see them safe and sound.
The next time they had to go into the woods, Tom Thumb’s mother gave them each a piece of
their remaining bread. Tom couldn’t find any more pebbles.
So, he decided to break his crust of bread into crumbs to scatter along the path. But when they
tried to find their way back, the crumbs were nowhere to be seen for the birds had eaten them all up.
Darkness began to fall on seven very frightened boys.
Tom Thumb climbed up a tree to get a better look and he saw a light in the distance.” “There’s
a house!” he cried. “Let’s go there!”
A woman opened the door but she said, “My husband is a wicked giant. He’s big and mean,
and he loves to eat little children. You’d better not come in.” But the children were more scared of the
wild animals in the woods and begged her to let them in. So in they went. The giant’s wife gave them
something to eat and hid them in a big bed.
“I smell fresh meat!” roared the giant when he got home. He searched high and low and he
found them sleeping in their hiding place.
“Great! I’ll eat them tomorrow!” said the delighted giant.
Now the giant had seven daughters each with seven golden crowns sleeping in a nearby bed.
In the middle of the night, Tom Thumb exchanged their caps with the girl’s crowns. At the dawn, the
giant crept into the bedroom. He felt the heads of the children who wore caps. Then, he gathered all
the children and placed them in a big sack not knowing they were his daughters. Tom Thumb and his
brothers escaped as quick as they could!
When the giant’s wife found all her daughters gone, her screams brought the giant furious that
he had been outwitted. He put on his seven league boots that helped him to travel very, very fast. Off
he went, after the boys.
After a while, he rested on a rock. Tom Thumb and the boys were hiding nearby. When the
giant fell asleep, Tom took off the giant’s seven league boots ever so quietly. He put them on linking
hands, he and his brothers hurried of as fast as they could.
Soon, he and his brothers were home, safe and sound once more. How his parents were
delighted to see them! “No, you need never worry any more,” said Tom Thumb. With these seven
league boots, I can become a messenger boy and we’ll never be poor again.”
It doesn’t matter how small or young you are, you can think of simple ways to solve everyday
problems.
