1.5 The era of Digital Transformation and Exponential Data

In todays digital world, where change is constant, managing data can be a

challenging and sometimes daunting task. Our obsession for instant access to
any information, at any time, and in any place, continues to accelerate data
growth at a staggering rate. In fact, IDC predicts that the collective sum of the
world’s data will grow from 33 zettabytes in 2019, to 175ZB by 2025, for a
compounded annual growth rate of 61 percent.

Digital business is changing the use and value of data. It has become central to
both business value and how that value is experienced by your customers.

IT security is now at the forefront of every CIO’s mind. Organizations must

protect themselves from online threats such as cyber-attacks and ransomware.
They must ensure systems are resilient, data and processes compliant, and
public clouds secured.

The regulatory framework around the world is changing rapidly to protect citizens
rights, by ensuring organizations adhere to the correct procedures for managing
personally identifiable information.

The transformation and integration of legacy systems is challenging, while

organizations strive to increase IT and business efficiency and improve customer
experience.

1.6 The Data Management Journey

So why is managing and protecting all of this data so challenging?

Let’s look back at where it all started… with the simple need to protect and
secure data. A physical server… a dedicated tape drive, just rinse and repeat.
As the data continued to grow, so did the infrastructure to protect it. A storage
array (or ten), network attached file storage (NAS), tape libraries…and did I
mention NDMP?
“Tape is too slow… and too unreliable”. “How about a Virtual Tape
Library”? It’s got all the benefits of disk and the backup software will never know
the difference!”
As backup capacities quickly surpassed the economical scale of regular
disk., storage vendors turned to data compression and deduplication
technologies. Now widely adopted in the backup market, this trend created a
whole new market for specialized backup appliances and software.
With ever growing data volumes, and the need for more aggressive SLAs.
Enter the storage hardware vendors with array based snapshot and replication
technologies. The storage vendors claimed “Traditional backup is dead”, BUT
you will need this additional software to ensure your applications are consistent
and recoverable… or you can script them? L

What about protecting our virtualized environment? I didn’t think about that one
yet. A growing number of applications? Cloud.. Hyperconverged?
eDiscovery/Compliance, Reporting, Encryption…

Well that escalated quickly, The data environment is looking a bit complex. The
data management journey has been tactical, not strategic.. Suddenly you have
different products for each different use case. Where’s the freedom to innovate?

1.7 Ready to Embrace Change?

Notes:

Data is now at the heart of everything we do, we believe now is the time to think
differently about data management, and for our customers to be ready to
embrace change.

First, the Cloud, [which is] synonymous to modern….. modern apps,

modern dev-platforms, modern data, modern infrastructure. Think of cloud as an
integrated collection of elastic services that will be used to transfer business for
the next decade. According to research from IDC, more than 70% of
organizations now run some kind of service in the cloud, compared to only 10% 2
years ago.

Customers require the portability and agility that can only be realized
through a hybrid-world. Multi-cloud solutions must be seamless, delivering the
right workloads, on the right infrastructure, at the right time. Applications and the
data must be abstracted from the underlying infrastructure to avoid-lock in and
deliver true cloud portability.

Next generation applications are inherently different and are transforming

our organizations. Cloud-native apps are decoupled from the infrastructure,
instead utilizing micro-services inside stateless containers. They are built with
highly automated processes and tools and deployed using infrastructure as code.
Customers need to empower dev-ops to work with the business transparently, in
order to provide automation, scale and reduce error.

According to Gartner, as of 2018 30% of enterprise data is stored in scale-

out storage systems in enterprise and cloud data centers, Gartner expects this
number to rise to 80% by 2021. New software defined architectures are designed

to abstract the application from the underlying hardware layer. Unlike traditional
architectures, modern storage solutions can address large scale by leveraging
infrastructures that are democratized, running on general purpose or commodity
hardware, where applications are truly distributed and fault tolerant.

We believe it is time for customers to start thinking about data and storage in a
unified way, where primary and secondary storage converge. Customers will
need to lean on technological advances in data management, leveraging
features such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and API integration.

1.8 The old way…

Notes:

Organizations have historically addressed data management with a point-solution

approach. This means that as each new challenge emerges - so does some new
technology to address it.

With this approach, organizations are left with islands of infrastructure and
applications that lack interoperability. Then there is the data itself, although many
of these point-solutions utilize data reduction techniques, the effectiveness is
limited when each solution uses and stores data independently. We know that
redundant data in organizations is highly problematic and often see inefficient
use of storage due to the tendency of data owners to “over protect” their digital
assets.

One of the obvious burdens of having a multitude of solutions in a single

environment is the operational aspect. Often, solutions are spread across
multiple functional groups, and valuable resources are pulled away from their
core competencies and value to help with the data management functions.

Then there is the drive for increased data insight and analytics. However,
multiple disconnected toolsets lack the ability to report on anything but
themselves and so organizations are faced with limited reporting or turning to yet
another tactical tool.

The bottom line is that customers end up with multiple point solutions that have
minimal or no integration, even though they are dealing with the same data. This
approach is unsustainable and results in inefficient spend, higher costs, and
increased levels of risk.

1.9 Right on Point…

Notes:

..”But my customer is only looking for a point-solution” .. Well most of the time
this is true, so don’t fight a losing battle - Sell them a point-solution….just make
sure it’s the right solution and help them avoid the mistakes of the past.

Implementing a point-solution to solve a specific challenge is no bad thing When

that solution can grow with their disparate needs over time. When that solution
enables them to protect, control, manage, and use their data - regardless of the
application or infrastructure. When that solution provides a single platform, based
on a common set of core functions and capabilities. When all those functions
share a modern, scalable software-defined repository. When it can be managed
through an intuitive dashboard-driven interface that simplifies managing and
protecting data through automation and machine learning.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do all that with a single solution that was so
flexible, functional, and reliable, it becomes second nature?

A solution that works with whatever digital tools you work with.

A solution that is simple to buy, simple to setup, and easy to use.
