Storm chasers
North America is famous for its wide open spaces, and this landscape can cause some very
exciting weather. In fact, the USA has more tornadoes than any other country – there are about
1,200 every year in a part of the country called 'Tornado Alley'. This is in the centre, from North
1
Dakota in the north to Texas and Louisiana in the south. ___ They are just normal people, but
their favourite activity is following storms and getting as close as possible to a tornado! We call
2
these people 'storm chasers', and it’s quite easy to become a storm chaser these days. ___
Gabe Matthews is a storm chaser, and he follows the weather as often as possible. ‘Seeing a
powerful tornado is an amazing experience,’ says Gabe, 'but it isn't easy to be in the right place at
3
the right time. My friends and I need to do a lot of work to find a tornado and get to it. ___ Then
we have to wait for ages before we see the weather changing. But when that starts to happen, it’s
so exciting.’
Many people become storm chasers because they like the danger. But Gabe is always very
careful. He tries to get close to the centre of the tornado, but not too close. 'Once I saw cars flying
4
through the air,' says Gabe, 'and a big American truck! ___ You don’t want those cars to hit you!’
Another reason people chase storms is to film them. A news channel recently used one of Gabe’s
films. ‘That film was exciting because it was a strong storm and it caused a lot of damage. It was
great to get it on TV.’ However, Gabe was even prouder of something else that he did. ‘My friends
5
and I heard screams when we were filming. ___ They couldn’t get out, so they were very relieved
when we rescued them. It was great to help people like that.’
Perhaps you have to be a little crazy to be a storm chaser. Certainly, some people say that storm
chasers just want to do something thrilling, But they’re often the first on the scene, giving
important information to the rescue services. So actually they often save lives.
A When we know that a big tornado is coming, we have to drive a long way.

Young entrepreneurs
How do you become a successful entrepreneur while you’re still at school? Four young people
explain how they did it.
I’ve always eaten cakes, but when I learned to make them I realised how unhealthy many of
them were. So I wanted to find a way to make healthy cakes, without much sugar. Instead of
lots of sugar, I used more fruit and healthy kinds of low-sugar chocolate. The results were
amazing – they were delicious, and also good for you. My mum encouraged me to start selling
them at our local market, and I came up with the name ‘Katie’s cakes’. I was surprised at how
popular they were! Now I’ve been contacted by a big supermarket. They’re keen to sell my
products, so I’m really excited!
I love writing, so one day my teacher suggested I started a blog. But there are lots of blogs on
the internet, and I wanted my blog to be different. Then I had a great idea. I'm really interested
in shopping, and I also know more about money than most teenagers: you know, how to earn
it and how to save it. So I started a shopping and money blog for teenagers. I give people
advice about shopping − and if they have money problems, I tell them the best thing to do. I
started the website a year ago, and it's grown and grown. Thousands of people visit my blog
now, and I make money from adverts on the blog. I’ve had lots of great messages from people
too. One person said that I had changed their life. That’s awesome!
I’ve had a computer since I was six years old, so I’ve grown up with I.T. I use websites all the
time to help me with my homework. But in the past I often couldn’t find the answers to simple
questions very quickly. I realised that many teenagers were probably having the same
problem. So I came up with an idea for a new website. It's designed to help people with their
homework, and it's already become very popular. It's for young people and written by young
people too. It doesn’t cost anything to use the website, but I have advertisements on there so
I’m making a lot of money. It’s brilliant!
When I was twelve years old, I wanted to go on a school trip. But my mum said that she
wouldn’t pay for it − I could only go on the trip if I paid for it myself. So I needed to sell
something and make money. My mum showed me how to use eBay, and I looked through my
old CDs, books and gadgets and decided which ones to sell. I made £100 in the first few days,
and after that I couldn’t stop. Now I’ve got an online shop. I buy things to sell in my shop, and
my friends and I make things to sell online too.

Storm chasers
North America is famous for its wide open spaces, and this landscape can cause some very
exciting weather. In fact, the USA has more tornadoes than any other country – there are about
1
1,200 every year in a part of the country called 'Tornado Alley'. ___ It's also in this area that there
are hundreds of people studying the weather. They are just normal people, but their favourite
activity is following storms and getting as close as possible to a tornado! We call these people
'storm chasers', and it’s quite easy to become a storm chaser these days. All you need is a mobile
phone, a good car and GPS.
Gabe Matthews is a storm chaser, and he follows the weather as often as possible. ‘Seeing a
powerful tornado is an amazing experience,’ says Gabe, 'but it isn't easy to be in the right place at
2
the right time. ___ When we know that a big tornado is coming, we have to drive a long way.
Then we have to wait for ages before we see the weather changing. But when that starts to
happen, it’s so exciting.’
Many people become storm chasers because they like the danger. But Gabe is always very
3
careful. ___ 'Once I saw cars flying through the air,' says Gabe, 'and a big American truck! That
was really exciting, but we watched it from far enough away. You don’t want those cars to hit you!’
Another reason people chase storms is to film them. A news channel recently used one of Gabe’s
films. ‘That film was exciting because it was a strong storm and it caused a lot of damage. It was
4
great to get it on TV.’ ___ ‘My friends and I heard screams when we were filming. We followed
the sound and found some people inside a building. They couldn’t get out, so they were very
relieved when we rescued them. It was great to help people like that.’
Perhaps you have to be a little crazy to be a storm chaser. Certainly, some people say that storm
5
chasers just want to do something thrilling. ___ So actually, they often save lives.

Once, when I was teaching English to children in Cambridge, I died while eating my dinner.
The children were eleven to fourteen years old and there were about one hundred and twenty
of them in the large hall of a boarding school. We were all eating ice cream when I made
strange noises and fell forward onto my plate.
This was not some unusual way of teaching the children about crime, but a murder mystery
game. It was a bit like a play in the theatre, but the whole school was involved. All of the
teachers were either victims or suspects and all of the children were detectives trying to find
out who the murderer was. The children knew the situation was serious as many teachers
were ‘dying’, so they were all very excited!
Lying next to my ice cream, I loved being a ‘victim’. However, I had to remember not to smile
as the teachers dragged me across the floor to get rid of my ‘dead body’ so the students knew
I was really ‘dead’. This was just the start of my murder mystery career!
Soon after that, one of my friends bought a murder mystery game and invited me and several
other friends to a dinner party. We all had to dress up as different characters. The story was
that one of our close friends had been murdered and we were all suspects. We had to tell the
other characters important information and question people about the information they gave.
Then, at the end of the evening, we tried to work out who had done it. I wasn’t very good at
the police investigation part, but I loved playing a part and the excitement of knowing that one
of the people in the room was a ‘murderer’.
Now I run my own company – Murder Mystery Occasions. I organise murder mystery parties
in restaurants or historic buildings. Usually I hire a private room so that the ‘murder’ doesn’t
upset other guests. Castles are particularly popular with my guests because they’re so
atmospheric, so I use them if they’re available. I write the scripts and employ actors to be
some of the key characters. People pay to come along and join in with the fun while having a
wonderful dinner. The murder usually happens somewhere between the starter and the main
course and there is always a lot of excitement when the police arrive to take fingerprints and
interview key suspects. People tell me that’s the best part. Then, at the end of the evening,
there is a prize for the table that guesses who is the murderer, but everybody who comes
along seems to enjoy the drama. So, you could say I’ve made a good, honest career out
of murder!

Do you want to be on TV or in a film? Well, if you do, then why not become an extra? Extras play a very small
part in a film or TV programme. They don’t usually speak. However, they may have to walk across the set or
stand with other extras as part of a crowd.
There are many agencies that are always looking for extras and some of them are online, so it’s easy to apply
wherever you live. You usually just need to fill in an application form and send in some photos. TV and film
directors often want extras who have a particular look. For example, they may want women with long hair for
period dramas and people who look a bit scary for horror films, so try to think about the kind of programme
that you’d like to be in when you’re choosing which photos to send.
So imagine you get a call to say a director wants you in their next film. You’re really excited, but what happens
next? Well, don’t be anxious about how you’ll look on screen, as the company will do lots of work on you when
you arrive on the set. You might have to wear your own clothes, but don’t worry about your hair and make-up
as there will be staff to make you look perfect for the role.
Now, although it all sounds really exciting, be prepared to sit around for a lot of the day, waiting until you are
needed for your scene. The time can go very slowly if you don’t have anything to do, so it’s a good idea to
take a book with you on any job that you get. Take some food and drink, too – you’ll probably get lunch, but
remember it’ll be a long day!
Most extras can earn about £90 to £110 a day. This isn’t very good for the number of hours that you need to
be available, but for the actual work that you do, it’s OK. However, people usually become an extra for the
chance to be on the big screen rather than for the money. Some people hope that it may lead to a real acting
part. This doesn’t happen very often, but there are some stories of extras becoming famous because a
director saw them on a film set. However, even if you continue to just be an extra, you might get to see one of
your favourite Hollywood actors one day, and it will definitely be something to tell all your friends about!

These days, UK weather forecasters usually know about extreme weather that is about to hit
the country, and they also try not to make unrealistic predictions about the weather. For
example, they don’t say that there’s going to be a ‘barbecue summer’ (a very hot summer
when people can cook outside all the time) or a freezing winter, because usually the opposite
happens. They now only forecast a maximum of five days, and people don’t even trust that –
they check regularly to see if a forecast is still correct.
You may think that living with this sort of weather every day makes people unhappy, but
actually it has an unexpected effect on a lot of people in the UK. They tend to get more
excited by sunshine than most people. They are likely to change into summer clothes
whenever they see the sun, whether it is August or December. They don’t mind the rain and
they’re always prepared for it, with their waterproof coats, boots and umbrellas ready by the
front door. They also know how to have a good time despite the weather. Rainy summers are
so common that people try not to let the weather spoil their fun. In fact, for some people,
particularly young children, the rain can be fun, and you may even find them singing in the
rain!

Mystery shopper
A Rita Adams (not her real name) has an interesting job, but she’s not allowed to tell anyone
about it in real life: ‘I’m a Mystery Shopper. That means that if I go shopping or go to a
restaurant for a meal, people think that I’m a normal customer, but actually I’m there to check
that everything’s OK.’
B Rita is paid by the company that owns the restaurant or shop. ‘Large companies want to
know what’s happening in their business, but it’s difficult for them to find out what the service
is like or if the tables are clean, because if a manager visits, everyone will make a special
effort.’ Most companies want to know what things are like for a normal customer – that’s why
Rita’s job is so important. ‘If I go to a restaurant, I’ll check the time it takes for the food to
arrive and if the table is clean. I also make sure the waiters say what they’re supposed to say.’
C Although Rita looks for things that are wrong with a place, she likes it when staff are doing
a good job. ‘I can usually find problems, but I really like it when I get good service. Sometimes
a member of staff is very good at their job and they do everything they can for me as the
customer. In my job, we call that “going the extra mile”.’
D ‘For every job I do, I have to write a report. I have to describe members of staff or write
down their names if they are wearing a badge. The company can then use my report to sort
out problems and also to give rewards to staff that are doing a good job.’
E Rita enjoys the job, but it isn’t as easy as people think: ‘I get lots of free meals, but I never
really relax when I’m working. I don’t do the reports until later, but I have to make notes or I’ll
forget things.’ And there’s one thing that she needs to be particularly careful about: ‘If staff find
out I’m a mystery shopper, I’ll lose my job. So I have to look like a normal customer. I’m quite
good at that now, but I’m always slightly anxious that one day someone will guess what I do!’

Airbnb is a great idea. People rent out rooms in their homes so that travellers can stay in a
real house rather than a hotel. There are places to stay all over the world and some are quite
unusual. When I went to Paris, I stayed in Nathalie’s spare room in her apartment. Although
the room was nothing special, it was great to stay with a real French person. She helped me
with my French and told me about some good places to go that weren’t in my travel guide.

I’ve only been camping once, but it was such a lot of work to put the tent up that I’ve never
done it since. That’s why my son booked a weekend of glamping for us. Glamping is very
popular in the UK. It’s like camping, but without the hard work. When we arrived at the
campsite, everything was ready for us. We stayed in a Mongolian tent called a yurt. We slept
in real beds and cooked our food on a fire. We even had newspapers and fresh orange juice in
the morning. I loved it, but my son didn’t think that it was worth all that money. I understand

was great to have some time just to look at things. You also go past some beautiful houses on
the river. I would love to do it again.

Shopping habits in the UK have changed over the last sixty years, and this can be seen in the
changing appearance of any British high street – the main shopping street in a town or city. In
1
the 1950s, high streets had rows of individual shops selling different things. ___ Most people
did this every few days in order to buy fresh food. The high street was a sociable place to be.
This started to change in the 1970s with the arrival of supermarkets. They gave people the
chance to buy everything that they needed in one place. People didn’t need to go to individual
2
shops any more. ___ So this new type of shop, along with a new way of storing meat and fruit
at home, meant that instead of doing a small shop every few days, people could buy all the
food that they needed for a week, or sometimes even a month.
As supermarkets became more popular, they changed from small local shops to huge
3
superstores. ___ They took people away from the high street. They also tried to offer
customers everything that they needed, like a coffee shop, a hairdresser's and a
4
chemist's. ___ But this meant that the shops on the high street started to close down as they
lost their customers.
These days, more and more people are choosing not to go to supermarkets to do their
5
shopping. ___ People are also trying to spend less money, so a new type of discount shop
has become very popular. It may be because of this that people have stopped doing big
weekly or monthly shops. Now they go to shops more frequently to buy what they need for the
next few days. So, in many ways, people seem to be going back to the way people shopped in
the 1950s.
A The idea was to get customers to spend all their money in one place.
B Customers knew exactly where to find the things they needed in each shop.
C And because of their size, many of these supermarkets were outside town.

I’m going to talk about the importance of spending more money on music in schools. I’ll begin ___ a discussion about the
2
role of music in schools. ___, I’m going to discuss how playing a musical instrument is good for your brain
3
development. ___ I’m going to talk about how playing a musical instrument helps you to do better at school and why
4
schools should therefore pay for all students to learn an instrument. Then I’ll ___ up the main points before taking
questions.
5 6
I’d like to start by ___ that people generally don’t think music is an important subject. I’ll tell you why I ___ that. Music is
not a main subject in most schools in the UK. Most children who sing or play a musical instrument do this in extra-
7
curricular clubs at the end of the school day. Parents pay for these classes and they are expensive. First ___ all, we need
to ask ourselves, is music a subject that should just be a choice for students with rich parents? Or should it be compulsory
8
in every school, as I believe it should, with schools paying for instruments for students to practise on? The ___ I say that
9
is because many studies show us that musical children get better scores in subjects like maths. Now I’d like to move ___
to my next point about music and the brain. If you play an instrument, it helps your brain development. There are a number
10
of ___ why I believe this. First, ....

Shopping habits in the UK have changed over the last sixty years, and this can be seen in the
changing appearance of any British high street – the main shopping street in a town or city. In
the 1950s, high streets had rows of individual shops selling different things. There was a
greengrocer's next to a butcher's next to a baker's, and people visited each place to do their
1
shopping. ___ The high street was a sociable place to be.
2
This started to change in the 1970s with the arrival of supermarkets. ___ People didn’t need
to go to individual shops any more. At the same time, more and more people had freezers in
their houses. So this new type of shop, along with a new way of storing meat and fruit at
home, meant that instead of doing a small shop every few days, people could buy all the food
that they needed for a week, or sometimes even a month.
As supermarkets became more popular, they changed from small local shops to huge
superstores. And because of their size, many of these supermarkets were outside town. They
3
took people away from the high street. ___ The idea was to get customers to spend all their
money in one place. But this meant that the shops on the high street started to close down as
they lost their customers.
These days more and more people are choosing not to go to supermarkets to do their
shopping. Instead, they are using the internet to shop from home and get their shopping
4
delivered. ___ It may be because of this that people have stopped doing big weekly or
5
monthly shops. ___ So, in many ways, people seem to be going back to the way people
shopped in the 1950s.
A So people aren’t spending as much any more and the superstores are trying to attract more customers.
B This new type of shop encouraged customers to spend much more money.
C Most people did this every few days in order to buy fresh food.
D Now they go to shops more frequently to buy what they need for the next few days.
E People are also trying to spend less money, so a new type of discount shop has become very popular.
F They also tried to offer customers everything that they needed, like a coffee shop, a hairdresser's and a chemist's.
G They gave people the chance to buy everything that they needed in one place.
