John Paul speaks 3 languages: Tagalog, English, and Bicol. Tagalog and Bicol are his first languages since he grew up speaking them with his family in Daet, Camarines Norte. He learned English in school where his elementary teacher required the students to only speak English in class. While he is strongest in understanding Tagalog and Bicol, he is less confident speaking English. Overall, English is his favorite language because it is universal and allows him to communicate with more people internationally.

How did you acquire your first language/s or I think that’s because of my parents’ Nationality.

Since when I was a child we always talk in Tagalog
language and some Bicol and I get used to it. I
think that’s how I acquired my mother tongue.

What skills can you perform using your first Listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

What is/are your second language/s? English

How did you learn your second language/s? From school, long time ago, I still remember my
teacher in first level elementary taught me how to
speak English. She also implemented the rule to
always speak in English every time we are inside
the room. That’s how I learned to speak English.

What are your language strengths? I can understand a lot of words and vocabulary.

What are your language weaknesses? I don’t have the confidence when I speak,
especially in English.
Which language is your favorite and why? English even though my mother tongues are
Tagalog and Bicol, the reason why is because it is
the universal language and the majority of people
use the English language to communicate and
understand one another despite the Nationality of
the person is.

I was born here in Daet, Camarines Norte and my parents’ Nationality is Filipino. During my
childhood, I’ve been exposed to one language which is Tagalog. I remember in our place I always hear
my parents always talk in Tagalog and so the people around me and then until I learned how to read and
write, thanks to my family. My mom taught me the most how to write, read and speak in Tagalog. Then
during my early childhood, I’ve been exposed now to Bicol and that’s because of my grandfathers and
grandmothers on both sides of my parents. They always speak in Bicol every time I visit them and at first
when I heard Bicol I cannot understand and follow the conversations my grandmothers and
grandfathers had. In the long run, I have been exposed to their language every time I come to them and
suddenly acquired and learned how to speak in Bicol and that was because of my grandmothers and
grandfathers who taught me how to speak. Tagalog and Bicol are the languages that I have been
involved with throughout my childhood. Until then when the time came that I need to attend school,
that’s the time where I encounter the English language. I remember my teacher taught me the words as
well as the meaning of them and at the same time the pronunciation of each word. Until such a long
time and hard work during my first level elementary I learn how to speak, read and write in English and
that’s because of the rules and regulations of what my teacher is implementing during her time. Though
I still don’t have the confidence to speak in English because I can’t put into word what inside my mind
and I rumble things up. So that’s the story of my language.
