Debate Script

This document outlines the opening statement for the government team in a debate on whether strong dictatorship is better than weak democracy. It introduces the speakers for the government team, who will argue that dictatorship allows for more controlled economic development through unquestioned decisions and massive infrastructure projects. It claims democracies have irrational voters who are uninformed on issues and unable to foresee long-term benefits. As an example, it cites the economic growth under South Korean dictator Park Chung Hee, which transformed the country from developing to developed through centralized five-year plans. The government team believes strong dictatorship is better able to develop a nation than weak democracy.

Good morning to the respected speaker, cautious time keeper, honorable judges, members of the

opposite team and my team members.

Before I put forward my case today I would like to define today’s motion ‘This house believes that
strong dictatorship is better than weak democracy’. According to the Longman dictionary of
contemporary English, dictatorship means a country that is ruled by one person who has complete
power and democracy means a country that has a government which has been elected by the
people of the country. In short our motion today is defined as the dictatorship is more powerful and
strong than weak democracy. There are some types of dictatorship like military dictatorships, single-
party dictatorships, personalist dictatorships, monarchies and hybrid dictatorships.

Today I as the Prime Minister and my line of Ministers will be the speaker for the government. I as
the Prime Minister will be the 1st speaker of government and will present 1st argument. After me, my
Deputy Prime Minister, 2nd speaker will argue about the right concerning motion. After Deputy Prime
Minister, my Minister will talk about the human rights. Today, we the government strongly believes
with motion ‘ strong dictatorship is better than weak democracy’.

Ladies and gentlement,

First of all why I agree with the motion strong dictatorship is better than weak democracy is because
the economy could be more controlled and sustained by a dictatorship, as the economy would be
run by the state. The Chinese government provides has better roads, railways, airports, ports,
manufacturing facilities, than neighboring democratic India. The dictatorial nature of the Chinese
government and unquestioned decisions has benefits of massive infrastructure improvements. The
Chinese building several hydro-electric dams, and moved several million people, which wouldn’t
have been able accomplished in a country with personal rights to property, or the power to self
determine their own existence. Taxes are usually low, because income is not an issue. Free-market-
oriented economists since Milton Friedman have strongly criticized the efficiency of democracy.
They base this on the argument that voters are irrational, among other things. Their criticism
towards democracy is that voters are highly uninformed about many political issues, especially
relating to economics, and have a strong bias about the few issues on which they are fairly
knowledgeable. The masses are not adequately educated to be able to foresee the betterment of
the community they belong to, and therefore are unable to cast a vote to that effect. For instance ,
we can take the former president of South-Korea . Park Chung Hee is a dictator that contributed a lot
to the country . It can be seen by the well known " Miracle of the Han River" that shows the rapid
economic growth that transforms South-Korea from the least developed country to a developed
country by implementing the first national Five-Year Plan that expanded the agriculture and energy
industries such as coal and electric power; development of basic industries such as chemical
fertilizer, cement, oil refinery, iron, and steel; Although it didn't immediately bring success to the
country , it brought a period of growth and modernization in preparation for long-term economic
success and policy reform. We all can agree that right now , Korea as become one of the most
affluent country and leading in technology sector . Therefore, as a conclusion, we the government
strongly agree that strong dictatorship is better than weak democracy.

Thank you, now I pass to the 2nd speaker of the government.
