LESSON 01:

Pre-Activity: Nature by Numbers

Watch the video by Cristobal Vila’s Nature by Number retrieved on July

27, 2020 from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etGcPpA3wRo. The video will
present how number is related with the different objects in nature.

Guide Questions:
Write your answer in a bond paper and it will form part of the portfolio that
you are going to submit as a proof of your performance.

1. What are the ideas of Mathematics that have changed your thoughts after
watching the video?
- After watching the video, my view about mathematics that it's all just about numbers
changed. The video shows how nature shows that mathematics is part of them—that
everything is associated with mathematics. Aside from this, I've realized that without
mathematics, this world will not be what we are living. There will be difficulties knowing
this and that, calculating every matter that lies. Mathematics is an aesthetic that we didn't
see because we have this in mind that math can only make your mind blow because of
different formulas.

2. What is the great idea that is associated with every little thing in nature?
- There are a lot of ideas that I've seen in the video. Some are the symmetry, number
patterns/theory, geometry etc. Every little thing comprises of different shapes and
numbers, which is part of mathematics. The pattern on how many petals that a sunflower
have, the circles and other shapes that you can see when you look into the dragonfly's
eyes and body, the number pattern you need to have in order to built a court—all are
related to mathematics. These show that mathematics is way beyond to what we see—it is
more than that.

3. How do you view Mathematics now as a discipline?

- Mathematics is not just a subject that can make us insane but it is a discipline that makes
up the world. Every little thing we have is associated with mathematics, making it
insanely beautiful. Plus, Mathematics as a discipline is organized into all sorts of
problems, the methods used to solve the problems, and the result of the problems.

Checkpoint 1 Mathematics in Nature

Give your insight about the relation of Mathematics and nature. Write your
answer on the space provide below. Your answer will be rated based on: Content
5 points; Originality 5 points and Organization 5points. Use extra sheet of bond
paper if necessary.

MATHEMATICS HELPS ORGANIZE PATTERNS AND REGULARITIES IN THE WORLD.

When we think about nature, Mathematics does not always come to our minds first. We think
that nature is all about science. But many modern researchers were interested to the idea of
studying nature’s patterns through Mathematics. We are being so ignorant about our surrounding
just like in mathematics we concluded that math is all about numbers and problem solving and
science is the only thing that talks about our nature. Even the study of moon and stars, planets
and universe called astrology in science, it also has pattern that is connected to mathematics
because it is our universal language in a logical way. We just need to open our eyes to see that
math is not all about addition and subtraction. It has a lot of beautiful concept that might interest
us. Mathematics is the most underlying aspect of logic possible, and therefore it is simple to
reason that mathematics is the representing the pattern of universe. Patterns are the core topic in
mathematics there are two main types of patterns in mathematics – the numeric patterns and the
geometric patterns. By understanding these patterns, significant theories in mathematics can be
understood and utilize. Numeric patterns can be observed in almost anything. For instance, the
numbers of steps you make while walking on the street or the measurement of the kilometer you
make while walking, even the clocks and the calendars has a numeric pattern. Geometric patterns
can be found most of the time in flowers, leaves and plants. Some animals also have these
patterns like the spot found on leopards, stipes of zebras or tigers and more. Mathematics will
always be in our life. It simply organizes patterns and regularities in the world by the means of it
exist in everything that our eyes see. Our world will not be formed with the help of mathematics
as the source of measuring something that is existing. We could learn a lot by discovering
patterns present in natural world. We could use these patterns to uncover the many mysteries of
the universe and use to create advancement that could help us create a better world in the future.
Mathematics serve as a tool that is used by humans to analyze, organized and apply these
patterns.

Checkpoint 2 Collage in the Rectangle
Make a collage of the things or objects that relates to your future
career as a nurse, radiologic technologist, medical technologist, pharmacist,
midwife, dental technician, pharmacy assistant, physical therapist, teacher, psychologist,
social workers, custom broker, tourism or hotel manager, IT specialist, computer
engineer or a criminologist. Use the golden rectangle below in making your collage or
you may use extra sheet of bond paper or 1/8 illustration board in making your collage.
Your output will be rated using the following criteria.

Criteria 10 8 6 4 2 Score
Creativity, use of original ideas, self-reflection
Art skills and techniques,, used media, use of
design elements and principles,
Craftsmanship, control of Media care taken for
work
Timeliness of submission, submit the activity
ahead of time or on the deadline
Completion of the self-evaluation

Analysis of the Artwork/Self-Evaluation

1. What was most successful about your work? WHY?

- The thing about my future work is how we send out goods and services in other
countries to provide their needs and wants. It is called trade the import and export of
goods and services, Trade is a basic economic concept that involves buying and
selling. And I think that is the most successful in my work because everyday we
consume goods that is needed for our survival.

2. Described how the project could have been improved.
- The project improved because of the pictures that help me visualize the related things
and objects about my future work. It think it could have been improved if the size where
I can put all the photos of those things is in the same size as the others to be more
emphasize.

3. What did you learn from your output? (Think beyond the obvious)

- Looking at my output gives me a clear understanding to my forthcoming work, and

helps me to organized related things and objects.

LESSON 5:

Module Summative Evaluation

Direction: Answer the following briefly but substantially. Give your personal insights in each of the
following questions. Your answers will be rated using the following criteria: Content 5 points; coherence
5 points; originality 5 points and clarity of the answer 5 points. Put your answer in a bond paper and
compiled it as part of your portfolio.

1. Identify things in nature and explain the concept of mathematics embedded in it. (Post a picture
of the object you have selected.)

- The shape of a shell is logarithmic spiral. The logarithmic spiral can be constructed from
equally spaced rays by starting at a point along one ray, and drawing the perpendicular to a
neighboring ray. As the number of rays approaches infinity, the sequence of segments approaches
the smooth logarithmic spiral (Hilton et al. 1997)
2. What is the most significant impact of the golden ratio to human development?
- The contribution of Fibonacci sequence is very essential by means of having the perfect

measurement in doing something such as paintings, pictures or anything that has something to do
with measurements. Golden ratio is under the Fibonacci sequence and it has also throw a big
impact in our life. Scientists found the sunflower as the perfect example of something that has a
Golden ratio in it. As people we can’t see what the microscope sees in the sunflower. But when
you take a look at the middle of the sunflower using the microscope, you will see the perfect
shape measuring at 1.16814 which is the so called Golden Ratio. Thus, just like Kem says that
mathematics will always be in our life. (Kem Bulaon, October 15, 2018, Connecting our life to
Mathematics.) Also Golden ratio is the basis to know if the sizes and shapes of face or body of a
human being is perfect. Sometimes it is also the basis of the beauty of a person.

3. What is main function of mathematics in your course?

- My course which is Bachelor of Science in Customs Administration is all about transporting
goods and services, the import and export, the buying and selling of products. We are the one in
charge sending out goods to other countries thus our ability to solve a problem is the main
function of math in our course, because every day it is possible for us to encounter problems not
just mathematical problems but also personal problems that helps us to balance the situation and
solve whatever problems we may encounter in the future.

4. Explain by citing examples, how is mathematics related to nature?

Mathematics seeks to discover and explain abstract patterns or regularities of all kinds. Visual
patterns in nature finds explanations in chaos theory, fractals, logarithmic spiral, topology and
other mathematical patterns.
For example, L- Systems form convincing models of different patterns of tree growth.
"And it is mathematics that reveals the simplicities of nature and permits us to generalize from
simple examples to the complexities of the real world. It may took many people for different
areas of human activity to turn a mathematical insight into a useful product" (Stewart, 1995, pp.
71-72).
