Man who uses sound to ‘see’
Brian Borowski has loved cycling since he was 13 years old. He used to spend hours cycling
around his farm in Ontario, Canada. However, Brian is also blind: he can’t see, but that hasn’t
stopped him from doing anything.
Brian was born blind. When he was three, he started teaching himself to use ‘echolocation’.
Some animals use echolocation to know where things are when they cannot see well. For
example, animals that fly at night or animals that swim for long distances under the water do
this. The animals make a sound and then listen to the sound as it hits a nearby object. They wait
to hear the sound as it comes back to them: this is called an ’echo’. The echo tells them where
the object is, but not what it is. Echolocation helps them to move safely and find food.
Brian makes a loud noise with his tongue or his fingers as he walks around, and then listens for
the echo. Echolocation helps him hear a tree or an object in front of him. He knows when an
object is large or small and where that object is. He uses the same method when he’s cycling.

Jewellery Thieves on the Run!

Police are investigating a robbery at Chapman’s Jewellery Shop that took place early yesterday
morning. Police arrested two thieves at the time of the crime, but they’re still looking for one
other man.
The police answered a phone call from a local man at 5.27 a.m. yesterday. The man heard a
noise coming from the shop window while he was parking his car. He was returning home after
working all night as a security worker at the local hospital.
When the police arrived, three men were filling a dark blue car with stolen jewellery. But then
the thieves drove away quickly with two police cars chasing them. The thieves crashed their car
at the traffic lights on Park Street. The driver escaped, but the police officers chased the other
men and arrested them.
According to the police, the thieves used the latest technology to turn off the security cameras
outside the shop. They broke into the shop through the back door and stole jewellery worth
£995,000. The police found the jewellery in the back of the car, and they are working with the
owners of the shop to return the stolen items as soon as possible.

Jewellery Thieves on the Run!

Police are investigating a robbery at Chapman’s Jewellery Shop that took place early yesterday
morning. Police arrested two thieves at the time of the crime, but they’re still looking for one
other man who was involved.
The police answered a phone call from a local man at 5.27 a.m. yesterday. The man heard a
suspicious noise coming from the shop window while he was parking his car. He was returning
home after working all night as a security worker at the local hospital.
When the police arrived, three men were filling a dark blue car with stolen jewellery. But then
the thieves drove away quickly with two police cars chasing them at high speed. The thieves
crashed their car at the traffic lights on Park Street. The driver escaped, but the police officers
chased the other men and caught them easily. The officers arrested them and then took them to
the police station for questioning.
According to the police, the thieves used the latest technology to turn off the security cameras
outside the shop. They broke into the store through the back door and stole jewellery worth
£995,000. The police found the jewellery in the back of the car, and they are working with the
owners of the shop to return the stolen items as soon as possible.

Life without smell or taste

What is it like to live with no sense of taste and smell? This is the reality for approximately 5% of
the population of Europe and the USA. It sometimes happens as a result of an infection or a
brain injury. Many people with Covid-19 have also experienced a loss of smell or taste, although
most recover their senses after a few weeks or months. It is a serious problem because it often
leaves people feeling lonely and like they aren’t connected to the world anymore.
Most people who think they have lost their sense of taste have in fact lost their sense of smell.
Smell is responsible for 80% of the flavours we taste. Losing this sense therefore affects our
enjoyment of food, which can seriously affect our quality of life. It can also be dangerous, for
example, if we are not able to smell gas when a cooker has been left on by mistake.
Some researchers think that people who lose their sense of smell feel depressed for much
longer than people who lose their sight. One reason for this is that smell is important for our
memory and losing that link to our past is very hard to deal with. It can have long-lasting and
devastating effects.

Life without smell or taste

What is it like to live with no sense of taste and smell? This is the reality for approximately 5% of
the population of Europe and the USA. It sometimes happens as a result of an infection or a
brain injury. It can be connected to old age, too, as our sense of smell and taste get worse after
the age of 75. Many people with Covid-19 have experienced a loss of smell or taste, although
most recover their senses after a few weeks or months. It is a serious problem because it often
leaves people feeling lonely and like they aren’t connected to the world anymore
The loss of taste, which is called ageusia, is rare and has much less of an effect on daily life. Most
people who think they have lost their sense of taste have in fact lost their sense of smell. Smell
is responsible for 80% of the flavours we taste.
