Pipeline Hydrostatic Test

This document outlines the hydrotest procedure for a dry gas pipeline project in Missan, Iraq. It details the purpose, scope, references, test equipment, procedures, safety precautions, and required records. The key steps include: performing a pre-test checklist, gradually pressurizing the line to 1.15 times the design pressure over 24 hours, repairing any leaks found, slowly depressurizing, draining and drying the line using compressed air, and maintaining proper safety measures and documentation throughout.

1. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this procedure is to define the basic minimum guideline for inspection,
Hydrostatic test of sweat gas pipeline .

2. SCOPE:
This procedure will cover the general requirement for inspection, Hydrostatic test of
sweat gas pipeline in these projects..

3. REFERENCE:
-ASME B31.8 –Gas Transmission &Distribution Piping Systems.
-AP1110 Recommended practice for pressure testing of steel pipeline for
Transportation of gas, Hazardous liquids, Highly volatile liquids or carbon dioxide.

4. PROCEDURE:
4.1 General
PIPE PRE TEST CHECKLIST:
Hydrostatic testing shall only be performed after activities are completed .The
project line would be constructed with thickness (7.8)mm of Api5L-X52 line test
pressure would be(47.5)kg/cm2.

4.2 Test Equipment:

a) Hydro test Pump f) Pressure Relief Valve

b) Pressure Gauges g)filling pump

c) Vent Release Valve d) Tube and Fittings

i) Water Tank j) High Pressure Hose and Fitting.

K) Air compressor.

4.3 Hydrostatic Test:

4.3.1 All pipelines shall be tested in accordance with project
specifications and the latest edition of ASME B31.8.

4.3.2 All pressure gauges to be used shall be calibrated ,The pressure

gauge readings should be within range of minimum 1.5 to maximum 4 times
of the test pressure. Minimum two calibrated pressure gauges will be used,
one near pump and other at the top most elevation of the line.

4.3.3 The water shall be used with the high volume low pressure pump
to fill the system..

4.3.4 All vent valves and other high point connections which serve as
vents shall be opened during filling and closed only when water starts to
overflow.

4.3.5 After filling, the pumping system shall be shut off and
disconnected from the system.

4.3.6 pressure shall be raised gradually, with stops to allow the

pressure to stabilize. The pressurizing of the system shall continue until the
required pressure is reached.

4.3.7 Caution shall be taken during pressurization to avoid surging

effects. Pressurization and depressurization will be done gradually.

4.3.8 The pump shall be shut off once the required test pressure is
achieved.

4.3.9 The pressure rise shall be accomplished progressively and

shall be bankrolled through a hydrostatic balance .The pressurization
speed shall be around 1 KG/cm2 per minute.
4.3.10 TEST pressure, as it has already been said, shall be equal to
1.15 times the design pressure and in on case shall it exceed 95% of the
pipe yielding point, whereas minimum pressure shall be no less than
1.25 times working pressure .the hydrostatic test shall have 24 hour
endurance. During the test ,pressure checked every single hour of
hydrostatic balance through two gauge ,one at each end.
4.3.11 hydro test Evaluation shall be considered as positive if pressure
has kept at a constant value throughout the scheduled time, except for
changes due to temperature in fluencies.
4.4 Rectification of leak:
Any leak in flange connections, bolting shall be carefully and gradually
tightened in proper sequence to prevent uneven tightening. If leak
occurred in the weld joint the water shall be drained and the leak shall be
repaired as per approved welding procedure.

4.5 Draining ,clean &Drying:

4.5.1 After hydrostatic testing of the pipeline is completed

satisfactorily, care should be taken during depressurization so as to avoid
any surging effects. Tested system shall be completely drained and blown
dry.
4.5.2 After the pipeline has been depressurized, all vents shall be
opened before the pipe is drained and shall remain opened during draining
to prevent vacuum effect in the pipe.

4.5.3 The pipe shall be completely drained. Compressed air shall be

used to blow dry the system.

4.5.4 All spades, blind flanges, ect, installed for testing shall be

removed.

4.5.5 cleaning& Drying ;

* The test section will be dewatered by propelling pig and using moisture &
oil free compressed air driving medium in controlled manner.

* Dewatering pigs shall be launched and backpressure of static head plus 1

bar shall be maintained at receiver end.

* On completion of dewatering operation , the pipeline shall be subjected to

swabbing using (1) pig trains.

* The pig trains consisting of High Density Criss – Cross Polyurethane

Coated and low density Bare Foam Pig shall be run using compressor air.
*On completion of swabbing operation, the pipeline shall be dried using
moisture and oil free compressed dry air .

5.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

 Following safety precautions shall be taken for the successful
completion of testing:

5.1 During pressure build-up, shall take suitable precaution to prevent

building up of excessive pressure, the pressure pump shall be
monitored at all times.

5.2 The test area shall be cordoned off and provided with warning
sign boards “CAUTION! Hydrostatic Test in Progress”, also
warning signs shall indicate the date and duration of test, and
the test pressure.

5.3 All system testing will be carried out in accordance with the
applicable codes, and project specification requirements.

5.4 After testing, depressurization will be carried out at safe location.

5.5 No tightening of bolts/nuts to be carried out during the

stabilization of the required pressure in the system.
