This document contains two questions from a tutorial on principles of magnetic resonance imaging. The first question asks about units of polarization, calculating polarization from spin percentages, relating magnetic field strength and temperature to achieve a given polarization, and calculating the required temperature for a given field strength and polarization. The second question asks about calculating the echo time at which two tissues with different Boltzmann magnetizations and transverse decay rates would deliver the same signal, given values for those parameters.

PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC
RESONANCE IMAGING TUTORIAL QUESTIONS
COURSE FACILITATOR: OMAR R. KOMBO
Question 1 (i) What are the units of polarization? (ii) What is the polarization of a spin sample if 51% of the spins are in the spin-up state? (iii) What magnetic field strength B0 must we apply to protons to achieve the polarization if the sample is at temerature T = 300 K? (iv) If we use B0 = 1 T magnetic field, what temperature must the sample be at in order to achieve this polarization? Question 2 Consider two tissues, A and B. The Boltzman magnetization of tissue A is 𝑀!" = 4.1×10#$ and it has a tranverse decay rate of 𝑇%" = 30 ms. The Boltzman magnetization of tissue B is 𝑀!" = 3.7×10#$ and it has a tranverse decay rate of 𝑇%& = 50 ms. At what echo time would both tissues deliver the same signal assuming all other parameters are equal?
