The scope of this working procedure is to define the criteria of workmanship for the
proper execution of the liquid epoxy (APCS 113A) application works in accordance with
Saudi Aramco Requirements, drawings, specifications, manufacturer’s instructions for
storage, application, handling and applicable codes and standards.
This procedure also covers minimum requirements for coating of APCS 113A (liquid
type epoxy coating) for repair of damages on shop applied external FBE coating in
buried piping spools and associated fittings in accordance with SAES-H-002.
The purpose of this working procedure is to detail the technique to be applied in proper
execution of repair activities.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Painting Supervisor:
Ensure full compliance by all painting foremen, painters, Abrasive blaster, labour
regarding execution of the work in accordance with PSAL/SAUDI ARAMCO project
requirements and specifications. Confirm the availability of all materials, tools,
equipment, and required personnel who will carry out the work. Conduct brief meeting
with all personnel involved in the painting.
Monitor daily coating activities and conducts inspections in accordance with the
approved project SATIP and associated documents. Prepares daily documentation and
final acceptance documents when required. Maintains close working relationship with
customer representative.
Safety Supervisor:
Check the work areas for any unsafe conditions. Ensure that all safety requirements
have been adequately addressed and the work shall be carried out in accordance with
PSAL/SAUDI ARAMCO project safety procedures.
5. PROCEDURE:
5.1.5. Paint shall not be used from a container showing a sign of leakage.
5.1.6. Paints which have exceeded the shelf life shall be set aside and not to be
used.
5.2.1. Ensure that supervisor and coating applicator hold valid coating
certification card issued by Saudi Aramco.
5.2.2. Saudi Aramco Paint Data Sheet and MSDS for coating system (APCS)
are always available at site.
5.2.3. Compressor air supply shall be free of oil, moisture and contamination. As
a minimum, the inspector shall check and approved the air quality at the
start and mid-point of each 8-hour period. This shall be determined as
below.
5.2.5. All edges of the original coatings are feathered out at least 50mm beyond
bare metal.
5.2.7. Paint shall not be applied if one of the following conditions exist ( unless
paint is specifically formulated for averted condition):

5.2.8. Paint shall not be applied during adverse weather conditions such as; but
not restricted to the following.
a. Wind is strong enough to blow sand, salt spray or other foreign matter
to the surface being painted.
b. Wind is strong enough to cause dry spray or otherwise seriously
disturb the spray pattern when application by spray gun.
c. Rain.
5.2.9. Cover areas adjacent to defects with adhesive tape before commencing
paint touch-up, apply paint by observing WFT & DFT requirement for
particular system with required overlapping, maintain the recoating
interval period and remove the adhesive tape.
5.3.1. Any dust on the surface of FBE coated shall be removed by using
compressed air & Clean the defective area by solvent or detergent wash.
5.3.2. Surface preparation shall be done as per Saudi Aramco Engg Standard
SAES-H-100 Section 5 and SAIC-H-2048 shall be applied. Paint
manufacturer’s recommendations shall also be considered
5.3.3. The gloss surface around damages shall be removed from the shop
applied FBE coating that will be overlapped by the patch-up coating by
light abrasive (sweep blasting) or sanding.
5.3.4. Damaged spot areas shall be grinded to a rough metal surface using at
least an 80 grit disc sander or alternatively garnet blast clean, feather the
coating edges at least 50 mm beyond bare metal and air blown to remove
dust.

5.3.6. For areas smaller than 1450mm2, epoxy patching compound (JOTUN-
120T640) shall be used. It was recommended by ‘GLOBETECH/FBE
powder manufacturer and for areas greater than 1450mm2 but smaller
than 0.2M2 (SIGMALINE-2000) shall be used as per SAES-H-002V
Total Dry film thickness (DFT) of APCS-113A shall be 600-1000 Microns for
coating with solid contents i.e. 85%.
The full coat of the repair/patch up coating shall be holiday tested with spark
tester at 2400 + 50 DC Volts when cured.
7. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
7.1. Read the material safety data sheet and be aware of manufacturer’s
recommendation.
7.2. Wear blasting and painting protective clothing and working gears. The
personnel shall wear breathing apparatus when carrying out internal blasting
and spraying activities.
